Turkey's anticipated high-speed train inaugurated today

After a number of delays, the Ankara-Istanbul high-speed railway line is finally set to be inaugurated today, with a fanfare ceremony attended by a number of prominent figures.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the ceremony, Transport Minister Lütfi Elvan said the line would carry 12 journeys, six in each direction, every day. The high speed line will cut the journey time between Turkey's two largest metropolises to around three and a half hours.

The exact price of tickets has still not been announced, but they are expected to come to around 75 Turkish Liras.

The train is capable of reaching speeds of up to 250 kilometers an hour. There are 10 stops on the line, Ankara, Polatlı, Eskişehir, Bozüyük, Bilecik, Pamukova, Sapanca, İzmit, Gebze and Pendik.

Elvan said rail transportation’s share on the Ankara-Istanbul route was currently around 8 to 10 percent, but the government aimed to raise this to around 75 to 80 percent.

He also encouraged private bus companies, which currently dominate the route, to get involved in the railroad business, as the state paved the way for more private companies to enter the sector with a regulatory change last year.

China Exports High-Speed Rail Technology to Turkey

After having built the world’s most extensive high-speed rail network, China is now beginning to export its rail technology, starting with last week’s inauguration of a high-speed railway in Turkey that links the capital of Ankara to Istanbul, the country’s largest city.

The completion of the railway project marks the first time that China has helped build a high-speed railway outside its borders, according to the state-run People’s Daily. Trains on the 330-mile railway line will run at speeds as high as 155 miles per hour, covering the distance between the two cities in three and a half hours, significantly less than the six or more hours by bus or car.

The China Railway Construction Corporation and the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation won the bid in 2005 to build the railway line in partnership with two Turkish companies, Cengiz Construction and Ibrahim Cecen Ictas Construction, People’s Daily said.

The project was financed in part by a $750 million loan granted to Turkey by China, said Gong Xiaosheng, China’s former ambassador to Turkey, according to People’s Daily. Of that sum, $500 million was in the form of loans on favorable terms, which Mr. Gong said showed China’s dedication to exporting its high-speed rail technology.

While China is hailing the completion of the rail line as a milestone in Chinese-Turkish relations, both countries have admitted to difficulties during the process. The project has reportedly been beset with problems such as delays and accidents.

“Turkey lacks railway construction know-how, so many changes had to be made to the route design during the construction process, which was a serious challenge for us,” Liu Zhiyi, China Railway Construction Corporation’s project manager in Turkey, told People’s Daily, adding that China had been tasked with building the most complex sections of the route.

Speaking at the inauguration of the railway line last Friday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey said: “We made a promise. We worked hard. We crossed the mountains, and passed over rivers.”

“Despite all the attempts of sabotage, obstructions and efforts to slow it down,” he said, “we have completed the line and are putting it into service.”

Even after the rail line’s completion, a technical glitch marred its highly anticipated maiden voyage, forcing the train carrying Mr. Erdogan to halt for half an hour near the city of Izmit, according to Agence France-Presse.

Local reports cited an overhead cable failure as having cut electricity to the train. With Mr. Erdogan set to run in presidential elections next month, Turkish officials have not ruled out the possibility of sabotage as the reason behind the unscheduled stop, A.F.P. reported.

I'm only glad to hear of the progress we're making in this field. The fact that we just recently got trains "worth" riding is a testament to how horrendous things have been in Turkey in the past.

I'm especially looking forward to the station that will be built in Karaman, my city.

Even poland has more research than you. But they don´t have ambitions to create a new ottoman empire unlike your puny government.

Ok lets compare Russia and Turkey.

Turkey population 75 million, 306.926 documents

Russia population 143 million, 586.646 documents

And now the growth rate

Turkey: multplied in last decade

Russia: no significant growth, even a decline from 2011 to 2012.

Do you even count scientifical research which was done in Soviet era?

Back than noone in the west counted Soviet papers because soviets were the enemy. Russia has technology to produce artifical diamonds in Moscow institutes.

You really want to compare your rail network with Russia, which have the 3rd largest rail network in world. BTW, where you stand?

Gone is not gone. Russian industry has the technological knowledge of the soviet union. Today Russia only uses it for military production but in fact Russia has the technological capacity to produce everything domesticaly. Only the nationalism is missing because there are too much caucasians infesting Russia. The average russian loses all interest to produce something when he sees the caucasians and chechens walking in the streets of moscow.

When i see at your country, i see heavily pumped up economy by US warmongerers to form a new enemy for themselfs in the future. After erdogan becomes president he will delete your ataturk and his military commanders. Than he will form a islamist military by using those ISIS commanders in Iraq. Turkey will leave NATO and become a hostile nation like Iran, North Korea etc.

Your tanks and weapons will face greek Leopard 2Hels and Apache Longbows. Your domestic corvetes with german engines will face USN blockades.

I am talking about a timespan of 10-20 years from now on.

US is feeding you to slaughter you later.

Actually bro, russia is producing everything. The real problem is, after the fall of Soviet Union, there manufacturing capacity blown like a bomb. Once the USSR was truly manufacturing nation, but not now, now the russia is become a natural resource nation, struggling to revive its industry.

Are you stupid? Its pretty clear what we are comparing and its not the length of train tracks.
