Feasibility Project for Satellite Launching Center Establishment

Within the scope of Satellite Launching Center Establishment Project Feasibility Survey, the given works that are listed below have been established to Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) in two separate reports:
  • Examination of satellite, satellite launching systems and technologies, satellite launching centers and satellite launching system development projects in the world
  • Market researches for satellite launching services in the following 10 years
  • Determination of administrative issues so as to include international law and insurance issues in relation with the subject
  • Determination of places where satellite launching locations could be settled in Turkey
  • Determination of basic properties of specified satellite launching places which shall transport useful loads with different configurations to different orbits
  • Examination of existing abilities in Turkey in terms of development, production and testing
  • Determination of critic, deficient, foreign dependent technologies
  • Determination of plant and infrastructure requirements
  • Calendar and cost assumptions according to different vehicle configurations and different supply methods
  • Supply model analysis

Road Map Project for Satellite and Space Technologies

Satellite Space Sub Unit and Technologies Feasibility Project was signed in 5 July 2012 in line with the claims of Undersecretariat for Defence Industries, under the coordination of STM and with the scope of study groups which consisted of leading study groups universities and companies from Turkey.

Within the scope of the work executed upon the inputs of participants more than 200; sub units and technologies which are deemed to be useful for being aimed by national satellite and space industry in short, medium and long terms and methods which are required to be followed for development of products having historical accumulation at available level under space conditions.

Predictions for satellite systems which are planned to be procured in our country in short, medium and long term within the scope of the work and a detailed satellite refraction based on the developments in the world have been revealed, and privileged technology areas which are deemed to be important for our country have been specified by an systematic approach, thus project offers over 130 prepared by company, research centers and universities acting in this field have been evaluated historical acquisition plan. Within this scope, assumptions of projects which are expected to be implemented in near and medium terms have been made in terms of technical, financial and labor necessities, and some suggestions have been put forth.

On 22 May 2013, Satellite Space Sub Unit and Technologies Road Map work terminated with the closing meeting with wide participation in Undersecretariat for Defence Industries has been a survey introducing concrete proposals in terms of road and strategies which are required to be followed at the stage of developing our nation’s own satellites and relevant systems with common sense.

Hall Effect Thruster Development Project (HALE)

With the Hall Effect Thruster Development Project (HALE), Turkey will have the first facility for research and development of electric propulsion systems. The facility will be established at TÜBİTAK UZAY premises by the support of Turkish Development Ministry. Future propulsion systems developed at this facility aim to meet the in-space propulsion needs of national missions in the short and long term.

The concept of electric propulsion was first proposed and studied in 1950s in Russia and the United states. In recent years, with the improved performance of the ion and Hall Effect thrusters (HETs), this technology has become an attractive alternative solution over the conventional chemical systems within the international space industry. HALE project will bring this new technology to Turkey, providing the necessary infrastructure and technical background to develop national electric propulsion systems. The facility established in the project will also be open to the service of Turkish space industry and academia who wish to work in this field.

The facility to be established in the scope of HALE project will have the required space simulators and diagnostic tools to fully design, manufacture and test electric propulsion systems. In addition, with the technical background gained in the course of the project, an engineering model HET with 1.5 kW power will be developed and used in the verification of the infrastructure. The HET is to produce 70 mN nominal thrust and expected to have 1500s specific impulse.

HALE project is a strategically, technologically and commercially critical investment for Turkey considering the domestic and international need of the electric propulsion systems for future missions. Through HALE project, development of propulsion systems using national resources will be possible reducing the dependency on foreign sources.

The project started in June, 2010 and is planned to be completed by the end of 2015.

This is the ticket for our satellite programs and equally importantly to our outer space robotic missions. Considering that much of the efforts about space explorations are focused on robotic missions with relatively smaller spacecraft the size of a satellite we can be one of the space faring nations in a much shorter timeframe than we were thought.

Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space today announced the official start of the G&[HASHTAG]#246[/HASHTAG];kt&[HASHTAG]#252[/HASHTAG];rk observation satellite system for the Turkish Ministry of Defense. The original contract was signed by Telespazio and the Turkish Defense Ministry in 2009, and the programme now officially enters the design and construction phase. Satellite launch is planned for 2013.

Telespazio, a Finmeccanica/Thales company, is the prime contractor for the system, which comprises an Earth observation satellite equipped with a high-resolution optical sensor, a satellite integration and test center to be built in Turkey, and the complete ground segment, in charge of mission control, in-orbit operation, data acquisition and processing. Local industrial partners include Tai A.S., Aselsan A.S., Tubitak Uekae, Roketsan A.S. and TR Tecnoloji.

Telespazio will also create a joint venture with a local partner to develop and market application services.

Carlo Gualdaroni, CEO of Telespazio, said: The G&[HASHTAG]#246[/HASHTAG];kt&[HASHTAG]#252[/HASHTAG];rk System represents another step forward for Telespazio and for the Space Alliance between Finmeccanica and Thales in the international expansion of their business. It also clearly recognizes Telespazios ability to supply both the space and ground segments of complex satellite systems.

Thales Alenia Space will build the satellite and develop an integration and test center in Turkey. Telespazio, in addition to the ground segment, is responsible for services during the satellite launch, early orbit and test phase. Turkish industry will be involved in the system design and development, as well as supplying some G&[HASHTAG]#246[/HASHTAG];kt&[HASHTAG]#252[/HASHTAG];rk system components. In particular, local partners will assist in the construction of the data acquisition station, the satellite integration center, mission planning systems and remote sensing data processors.

This success also expands our position in Turkey, a long-standing customer in telecommunications. This is our first export contract for a high-resolution optical observation satellite, further showing our unique array of expertise and reputation as a preferred partner in defense observation missions.

Derived from the Proteus platform developed by Thales Alenia Space, the G&[HASHTAG]#246[/HASHTAG];kt&[HASHTAG]#252[/HASHTAG];rk satellite will include a high-resolution optical instrument, similar to that used in the Pleiades program.

JUNE 11, 2015: MICROWAVE ELECTROTHERMAL THRUSTER IS TESTED.


The prototype microwave-electrothermal-thruster (MET), designed and built by Mehmet Serhan Yildiz, is successfully tested inside the BUSTLab vacuum chamber. The thruster operates at 2.45 GHz microwave frequency. Power levels of up to 550 W was delivered to the thruster during its initial tests. The first picture below shows the power generation and delivery system located outside the vacuum chamber. The power is brought inside vacuum chamber with high power microwave cables and a 7/16" power feedthrough. The second picture shows the prototype MET thruster, placed on a stand, and its high power microwave connections inside the BUSTLab vacuum chamber. The third picture shows a close-up view of the MET thruster before its initial tests. The forth picture shows the thruster in operation inside the chamber. The last picture is taken from one of the side viewports of the BUSTLab vacuum chamber. From the forth picture, through the circular window port on the thruster, it is possible to see the plasma inside the resonant cavity of the thruster, as well as the plume exiting the nozzle of the thruster.
