"It will also buy Joint Strike Missiles from the Norwegian company Kongsberg to be deployed on new, state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighter jets which are just joining the Japan Air Self Defense Force fleet."

Does that mean Norwrgian JSM will be the official missile of F35..
I though we were friends with japans, why did they go for norwegian missile

I read it on cnn

Maybe Som-j is not ready yet

Japan's needs are urgent and Jsm is ready to be fired right now. SOM and Jsm will both be used by f35, it will depend on the marketing of each team.

ANKARA

Turkey is consolidating its air defense by producing long-range air defense system and buying air and missile defense systems from abroad, a government official said.

Turkey is doing its best to protect critical facilities, cities and to eliminate air threats, said the official in Prime Minister’s Office, who asked not to be named due to security reasons.

As part of a deal with Russia, Turkey will get two S400 systems - one is optional - from Russia. The total cost of this system is expected to be $2.5 billion.

The S400 system has been in the inventory of Russian Army since 2007.

This missile system -- designed for high efficient guard -- is able to detect 600-kilometer-away targets (372.8 miles) and eliminate targets such as stealth aircraft and ballistic missiles.

The S400 system is composed of at least one mobile operation command center and 8 launcher and 32 missiles.

About buying of S400 air defense system, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the purchasing of this system will be finalized this week.

Technology transfer

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Turkey on Dec. 11 and this subject came to the fore during his visit.

In the meantime Turkey, France and Italy started cooperation about producing and developing air missile defense system.

The cooperation includes technology transfer among countries and joint production.

Turkey's Minister of Defense Nurettin Canikli and Paris-based defense contractor EUROSAM's partners -- French and Italian defense ministers -- signed a declaration of will on Nov. 8.

EUROSAM consortium and Turkish defense companies are expected to start works to determine Turkey, France and Italy's mutual needs as well as analyzing an air defense system using SAMP-T system as base.

SAMP-T (Surface-to-Air Missile Platform) is a long-range, medium altitude air and ballistic missile defense system.

In addition Turkey is in talks with U.S. to buy Patriot missile systems.

Patriot missile system -- designed to hit aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles -- has missile batteries, which can be fired separately.

Air defense systems

Patriot missiles can detect missile threats on radars in the zone where they were deployed and make firewall, which enables the system to eliminate missiles in the air.

In addition to buying air defense systems from abroad, Turkey goes on to produce its own long-range air defense system.

Turkey speeds up BORA missile, which is a long-range land-to-land weapon system, KASIRGA, HISAR and KORKUT projects.

Bora missiles' delivery test was successfully made on May 11.

Kasirga missile, which is in Turkish Army's inventory, has been upgraded. This missile can now move as a guided missile and its range was boosted to 120 kilometers (74.5 miles).

HISAR and KORKUT projects are for low- and medium-altitude air defense and the projects for these missiles were started to reduce dependence on foreign sources in air defense field.

Hisar was made by Ankara-based missile-maker Roketsan, while Korkut was produced by the other defense contractor Aselsan.

Turkish Missile Could Be Integrated on F-35

A new stand-off missile developed for F-35 joint strike fighters heading to Turkey could end up on U.S. aircraft as well.

Roketsan, an Ankara, Turkey-based weapons manufacturer, has developed the Standoff Missile-JSF, or SOM-J, made specially to fit the F-35’s weapon bay, said Ersin Dag, the company’s product engineer.

The latest variant of the country’s air-to-surface missile has a range of nearly 135 miles, weighs approximately 1,333 pounds and includes multiple guidance systems, including GPS, an imaging infrared seeker and automatic target acquisition, according to the company. It features a semi-armor piercing warhead and can be used to target ships, surface-to-air missile sites, strategic assets and exposed warcraft.

The missile could soon be certified to go on Turkish joint strike fighters. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35, expects to begin delivering 100 aircraft in 2018, with the jets expected in country in 2019, according to the company.

Lockheed partnered with Roketsan to provide certain aspects of capability development and integration of the SOM-J onto the Turkish F-35, including mission planning and data link information, said Alan Jackson, vice president of strike systems for Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control.

Jackson’s office is also working with the company’s aeronautics division on integration requirements that would later be made available to U.S. F-35s, he added.

“Although no U.S. Air Force or Navy requirements exist at this time, the U.S. government may benefit from Roketsan’s investment in SOM-J development and integration activities by providing additional flexibility and firepower to the F-35,” he said.

Roketsan is currently certifying the SOM-J to be placed on the future Turkish F-35s, Dag said. It has already been certified for use with the F-16, and multiple ground and flight tests have been conducted with that aircraft, he added. That way, the Lockheed-Roketsan team will have plenty of data to inform integration with the F-35, he noted.

The first variant of the stand-off missile, known as SOM-A, was developed in 2004 for Turkey’s F-4E fighter-bombers and F-16 fighters, Dag said, adding “there was a gap in the stand-off missile [capability] for Turkish air forces.”

He noted that there is international demand for the SOM-J. “Other JSF partners will need a stand-off missile [for] anti-surface warfare with a range of 100 or 200 nautical miles,” he said.

It should be before Konsberg’s JSM dominates the market
