ASELSAN has been carrying out an R&D Project on development of Electromagnetic Launcher (EML) successfully since 2014 so as to gain electromagnetic launch system technology. In the light of these studies, the first results of developed prototype of Electromagnetic Gun System (known as Railgun) has just been received. ASELSAN proved its experience and claim in this area with first live firing tests that were conducted successfully between 26th and 29th of December 2016. ASELSAN keeps working on this area without slowing down and will demonstrate its first EML prototype in IDEF 2017.

Thanks to its higher muzzle energy and 2000-2500 m/s projectile speed, thus effective range greater than 300 km, Electromagnetic Gun System is also evaluated to be an air defense system that is highly effective against modern air threats. Electromagnetic Gun System which brings significant technological advantages to battlefield, also ensures Multi-Mission Capability by means of developments in smart ammunition technologies. In other words, a single Electromagnetic Gun System can be used in different roles and areas.

General Specifications of Electromagnetic Launcher

  1. Long - range weapon technology with high-power electromagnetic energy
  2. Low cost mission effectiveness against current threats
    1. Lower unit cost
    2. Lower handling cost
  3. Multi-Mission Capability
    1. Naval Surface Fire Support
    2. Surface Warfare
    3. Air Defense
    4. Aircraft or Satellite Launcher
  4. High Platform Reliability ( no chemical explosives)
Within Electromagnetic Launcher domain, ASELSAN has been working with the aim of gaining critical technologies step by step; becoming the leader of Electromagnetic Launch Technology and putting such technologies into practice. In the near future, ASELSAN aims at becoming one of the leading producer of Electromagnetic Launchers with products that will be developed by ASELSAN itself.

Good development, Pakistan should look into it.

Aselsan is really the shining star of Turkish defense industry, though companies like Roketsan are great too.

Those are companies that are obviously being run by competent people, companies where some really good specialists work. I am sure that their budgets and resources are nowhere nearly as big as those in western companies yet they don't stop to amaze us with the new prototypes and solutions and projects that are being revealed every week. And the best of all is that everything they develop is of great quality.

All that comes to show us what can be achieved if Turkey's resources are being used wisely and if science and education are taken seriously by those running the country.

.
Me loves it.

Long years ago I was the buddy of an engineer who was blinded from laser tests.
I can mention the European Hospital, but you could identify persons.
Aselsan was sabotaged as MKEK was done for long time.

Turkey should most immediately transfer this R&D to Pakistan's DESTO and jointly run a parallel backup development program, so to finish the project under the thick cloud of security provided by Pakistan's intelligence apparatus. I am sure those who are familiar with such developments would appreciate the point im raising. Pakistan had 4 redundancies for its nuclear program and all of them paid off.

Best greetings from my friend captain RSG Pakistan Special Forces.

Still I think how they solve the energy problem of a railgun maybe they have some compulsator in size of a car or truck :cheesy:

I also dream to see some efforts in a coil gun project maybe this could result in a space catapult project

What i don't understand about this system is; "How it's able hit an air craft from 300 km" ?

If it's firing an unguided projectile...let's do some calculations first.

Bullet needs 300km/2.5km/s = 120 seconds to reach it's target. (actually bullet will slow down due to the friction of air and it will take more time to reach it's target but we are neglecting air friction.)

An aircraft with the speed of Mach 1(340m/s) would travel 36 km until the bullet reaches it. It's impossible to hit an aircraft.

If we say munition is guided;
G force on the projectile would be approximately 255 G !! (assuming it took 1 second to reach 2500km/s, firing and exiting from the muzzle)
I don't think, the electronic parts in the seeker head can withstand such forces.

So, it's kind of bleak for me, to use such systems against aerial targets.

I think those "highly" qualified Engineers already tho' about that.
So if they "think" it could be possible at some limited range..; then there is a good chance it does...

Then let me put it this way;

Forget 300 km and lets say aircraft is just 2.5 km from the system, it would still take a second to reach it and aircraft would travel 340 meters. System must know the exact path and velocity of the aircraft to score a hit.

Nice calculation. I think if you consider this system as a "Universal Launcher" you will solve the problem, not like a tank cannon. You will be able to launch any kind of ammo of any speed thanks to adjustable electromagnetic power. Main objective of this project is to reduce explosive and jet fuel expenses. IMHO, when needed it will able to launch guided missiles and unguided projectiles. Complex algorithms will do the job by calculating speed/target/hit point variables.

Maybe it's gonna be used like Korkut , using AHEAD ammunition....but hypersonic flight characteristics is much different in this case....i dunno, let's wait and see....
