Turkish Directed Energy Weapons

But all this assertions based on reflectivity of 90%, which I doubt can be achieved for now.

Yea, and the fact 50kW is just tech a demonstrator stage, every company that researches into this already announced they have plans for more power. So, if the difference is only 7 kJ between melting point and present power output, then even at 90% reflectivity (if it comes to materials that can reflect so much with physical strains of a missile in flight/launch) it would still not protect.

Melting point and heating. But read the post above yours..

There is not much to calculate. Increase the energy 2 and half times, the temperature would increase by the same ratio - 275 kelvins. Unless you have hit the melting point, where most of the energy would go into melting the metal and not increasing the temperature.

Latent heat of melting for Al is 350 times higher than specific - 321 kJ/kg.
Latent Heat of Melting of some common Materials

So to melt 100 gm of Al, 32kJ would be required, more than 50kW/25kJ. So depending on conductivity and initial temp, lot less than 100 gm would be melted.

But all this assertions based on reflectivity of 90%, which I doubt can be achieved for now.

In-depth knowledge!!
No way. In fact even my field is a potpourri. Many fields, material, optics, plasma, electro magnetism, high energy physics and more. But lets not talk about my research, I am running away from it here! :P

Please do :P!

Sounds similar situation when USA concentrated on Atomic bomb...While the Japanese concentrated on "Death ray"
guess who won the war...

First prototype of Turkish High Power Laser Weapons System was tested

Turkish defence industry engineers successfully tested the first prototype of the High Power Laser Weapons System, according to a Turkish daily. Research and development efforts started a year ago through SAVTAK The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) defence and security research groups suggestion to start a partnership with Aselsan, The Scientific and Tubitak and Bilkent University with a budget of $120 million. The tests were carried out in TUBITAK’s laboratories over the past few days where the prototype successfully destroyed the target.

It took the U.S & Israel 5 or so years to get the laser to the point where it was able to shoot down rockets.

This is not a project of mass production, it is a 'research and development' project. The production planning will be made following the results of research and development process."[/QUOTE]
I wonder what kind of targets were destroyed. They said that the test was done in a laboratory so I imagine that it was a small stationary targeting being destroyed by a laser just to prove that the technology that was developed is working.
It will probably take another few years before this can shoot down rockets or destroy other targets.

Death ray

the japanese did not have this guy :D

@ laser project I would say if we had laser system in wich we kill or blind the pilot it would be enough for planes.. but I know it is controversial to do it.. but in war it could be usefull..

this project will have to similar features with rheinmetal's laser weapon program. product design may have multiple sources for transmission. its experimental project for short range point defence , not a offensive weapon.

Turkish Indigenous Laser Weapon Advances

ANKARA — Procurement officials have confirmed press reports that Turkish engineers recently successfully tested the first prototype of a laser weapon similar to a US-developed system.

The country eventually aims to develop and manufacture an indigenous high-power laser weapon system that will detect, track and neutralize land, sea and aerial targets, the official said.

"The system will be primarily used against enemy drones, cruise missiles and mortar ammunition," one official familiar with the program said.

In 2013, the Turkish government announced that it planned to develop a precision laser close-in weapon system initially to be installed on the planned next-generation frigates, the TF-2000. The government tasked the state scientific research institute's (TUBITAK) defense and security technologies research and support group, SAVTAG, with the program.

SAVTAG has partnered with military electronics specialist Aselsan, Turkey's biggest defense company, and Bilkent University in Ankara. A research and development budget of around US $450 million was earmarked for the effort.

"The first critical phase has been successfully completed," one TUBITAK official said. "The first prototype successfully destroyed the designated target."

The tests were carried out at TUBITAK's laboratories, and the officials said the target was destroyed without the weapon being affected by the moving platform on which it was installed.

"This is the R&D and design phase and we are planning quickly to move on to advanced development," the TUBITAK official said.

Turkey's military and government leaders agree to support the program and add it to the military's inventory "as soon as possible," the official said.

Early in February, Army Gen. Necdet Ozel, the top military commander and chairman of the Turkish General Staff, discussed the program with Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Isik. They agreed to expect deliveries within six years, the official said.

In the first, four-year phase of the program, a laser system will be procured potentially from a foreign supplier and will be integrated into the weapon system. The second, two-year phase will see a locally made laser system to be integrated into the weapon.

TUBITAK aims to build a system architecture enabling additional features in the future.

Can You Imagine, One Developed by Tubitak Sage, on PARS or ARMA = limitless source of ammunition.

Rheinmetall surprises IDEX 2015 with a High Energy Laser mounted on a GTK Boxer platform

The Boxer family concept is based on a uniform drive module and interchangeable, user/role-specific mission modules. Designed for maximum versatility, these build-on modules lend themselves to the development of a wide variety of mission-specific variants. At IDEX 2015, a Boxer vehicle equipped with a high energy laser (HEL) effector module is on display at the Rheinmetall stand, exemplifying the extraordinary versatility of this state-of-the-art fighting vehicle.

The 20 kW-class Mobile HEL Effector Wheel XX mounted on the GTK Boxer features a special HEL effector module that takes full advantage of the vehicle’s unique modularity and Rheinmetall’s proprietary HEL effector know-how, which is based on beam superimposing technology. Moreover, this technology makes it possible to combine several GTK Boxer HEL vehicles, creating a system of systems with an effective power level of over 100 kW.

The HEL Boxer represents the leading edge of a Mobile Highe Engergy Laser Weapon. Integrating a Laser Weapon Module including power supply and cooling into the Boxer vehicle, with its inherent high level of protection and the unique mobility.

The HEL Boxer is able to neutralize modern air and asymmetric threats with its outstanding flexibility from defeating optronics on air crafts, downing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), neutralizing ammunition of weapon systems without detroying them and disposing of unexplodes ordnance and clearing battlefield obstacles.

The HEL boxer has a lot of advantages: its mobility, its low cost per engagement, is ability to engage optronic systems, UAS, ammunition and weapon systems, unexplodes ordnances...

During IDEX 2015, Rheinmetall is showcasing its product on booth 09-A10.
