Turkey's Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz has submitted the country's 18.2-billion-lira (USD 10-billion) military budget for 2012 to the Turkish parliament, Press TV reports.

Attending the parliament's planning and budget commission on Friday, Yilmaz also announced ambitious defense projects including the production of national military aircraft.

The minister noted that Turkey will begin producing a domestically-made helicopter within five years and its own fighter jets in 10 years.

He added that the country has also launched a project to set up a home-made missile defense system.

In October, Turkey announced that it will begin the mass production of its first domestically-made cruise missile, named SOM, in 2012, as part of Ankara's plans to reduce defense reliance on foreign countries.

Meanwhile, Turkey has boosted the budget of its National Intelligence Organization (MIT) in response to public anger over the death of two dozen Turkish soldiers in a recent battle with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist group.

Turkey's MIT and the security forces will receive an additional USD 6 billion from the defense industry support fund, provided by the government.

credibility of such a news is questionable but still I am a bit excited  guess a kind of mistake most probably they are just talking about 4+4 patriot pac 3 or S-300PMU2 or again are we gonna try something crazy(in a nice way) with Koreans?

now turkey should follow indian MMRCA example...and keep asking tenders from defence firms round the world for a decade before actually buying anything.

corrections! no more Press TV!

its not home-made missile defense system but SR and MR air defense systems so nothing new! and 10 billion $ is the total worth of various defense projects Turkey is currently undertaking!

Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz submitted his ministry’s budget for 2012 to the parliamentary planning and budget commission on Friday. Speaking during the commission meeting, Yılmaz said Turkey aims to meet domestic demand as well as that of other countries in the region with the new helicopter manufacturing plans.
Yılmaz said Turkey would also begin to design and develop warplanes and training aircraft. Turkey would also design air defense systems and begin production within next five years, he added.
The size of the world helicopter market is currently estimated at $20 billion. The volume of Turkey’s defense industry is about $2.7 billion. It is estimated that Turkey’s defense industry exports will multiply several fold with the domestic production of military helicopters.

The total worth of various defense projects Turkey is currently undertaking is about $10 billion. Some $7 billion of this is allocated to the military’s helicopter project. In the latest purchase of this kind, Turkey bought 109 helicopters from the US-based Sikorsky company for $3.5 billion.
Turkey is co-producing helicopters with Italy in a joint project called ATAK, but Turkey’s dependence on foreign technology remains unchanged when acquiring new helicopters. ATAK, military officials said, has contributed significantly to Turkey’s growing technical knowhow, which will be crucial for the national helicopter project.
Defense Minister Yılmaz said tenders on clearing land mines from the country’s border with Syria will be held in 2012, adding that the ministry aims to clear border territories off mines by the end of 2016.
