Turkey supports Iranian-backed Iraqi offensive against Kurds

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Ankara expressed support on Monday for a military offensive, joined by Iranian-backed sectarian militias, the Iraqi army launched to take over the Kurdish-majority city of Kirkuk.

"We are closely following the steps the Iraqi government is taking to establish its constitutional sovereignty over Kirkuk, the homeland of our Turkmen kin throughout history," said Turkish Foreign Ministry in a statement.

"Turkey will side with the Iraqi government in taking steps to ensure lasting peace and stability in the country," the statement read.

The release on the ministry's website once again attacked last month's Kurdistan Region referendum on independence from Iraq, which saw 92.7 percent of people voting in favor of it, calling it "illegitimate."

Ankara also welcomed remarks by Baghdad over the weekend that "the presence of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters" in Kirkuk was a "declaration of war."

Since when Kirkuk become a Kurdish majority city ? The city majority are Arab and Turkmen .
And for Gods sake we only support Iraq or any nation in region sovereignty . the operation have nothing to do with Iran and is conducted by Iraqi people themselves.

I think they mean many of the Shia militias (like the PMF) involved are backed and even trained by Iran, that's public knowledge. I don't think that's a secret anymore. However, I don't think that makes any difference to be honest, as far as the operation is backed by the Iraqi government.

That's true but KRG attempts to label it as an Iranian led operation, state that the IRGC is involved which is not true etc.

Iranian backed just means that they have support from Iran which is true. Norwegian media says that the shia militias are burning down kurdish houses and killing civilians. Is it true?
