ANKARA/ ISTANBUL:
Turkey’s top defence industry official said on Tuesday any US sanctions against Ankara would not affect the country’s several existing projects, including a helicopter deal with Pakistan, but could impact other deals with Islamabad such as Pakistan Atak helicopter and Hurjet aircraft projects.
Ismail Demir, the head of Turkey’s Defence Industries Presidency (SSB) said that despite new US sanctions, the defence industry would continue to move forward. “We expect this [sanctions] not to affect our relationships too much,” told reporters after speaking to parliament.
The US on Monday imposed sanctions on Turkey over its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defence system. The sanctions, coming under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), target the SSB, including Demir, and three other officials.
Starting on January 20, the incoming US President Joe Biden administration may also bring changes in policy – positive or negative – and the US sanctions could also trigger sanctions from the EU, Demir said, speaking a day after the US announcement.
The SSB chief underlined that the sanctions should not affect existing projects, such as the T70 helicopter, but added that the Pakistan Atak helicopter and Hurjet aircraft projects would probably be affected.
The sanctions will slow down Turkish defence projects related to the US for a short period, but the Turkish defence industry would take advantage of this process and manage to take over production of all critical parts in the long term, he stressed.
“The development of the domestic industry will continue, perhaps even faster. In a sense, this [sanctions] will serve as a flare and a warning,” he said, underlining Turkey’s nearly 70-year NATO membership and Ankara’s relations with fellow members and the US in several areas.
In April 2017, when its protracted efforts to buy an air defense system from the US proved fruitless, Turkey signed a contract with Russia to acquire the S-400 shield. The US opposed their deployment, claiming they would expose next-generation F-35 jets to possible Russian subterfuge.

So Americans denied the sale of their advanced Patriot missile defense systems according to Turkish needs and specifications but also decided to bar and punish Turkey for its shopping from elsewhere to meet its air defense needs.

in essence the Americans wanted Turkey to be defenseless and vulnerable

All about control.
These sanctions will be a blessing for Turkey in the long run. Turks are way ahead of Pakistan in manufacturing and look how Pakistan moved forward during sanctions. Now we have major projects of our own.
Turkey will develop the key components it needs. Engine tech being one. S400 is an excuse. Turkish weapons industry is running past western counterparts in some areas such as drones and lazer weapons. They have to clip turkeys wings. But knowing the Turks they will come back fighting with even better products

Turkey should make up their mind - be an American ally or a Russian pawn. I say return the dumb S-400 and mend relations with the West, including Israel.

I honestly think it's more like the US should make up its mind whether it wants Turkey as an ally or an enemy.

They're more than happy to have the Turks assist them in occupying Afghanistan and wherever else it benefits the US but kick out Turkey, a NATO member, from the F-35 program after it paid $1 Billion USD into the program and was there from the concept development stage while denying them air defense systems like the patriot and THAAD all while selling those same systems to non-NATO members like Israel and the UAE.

That doesn't sound like a nation that's an ally.

Even stranger is that the US arms, trains and finances PKK terrorists instead of partnering with Turkey, gets upset when Turkey targets those terrorists only to abandon the PKK anyways later on.

in essence the Americans wanted Turkey to be defenseless and vulnerable

All about control.

The problem is that the US disregards its own interests, security and freedoms for the sake of Israel.

My personal view is that this was about protecting Israeli dominance in the region and a assertive Turkey that isn't going to kowtow to Zionists being given advanced armaments or allowed a strong economy to develop them itself to defend their nation and the rights of Palestinians is a threat.

How any American could support this nation is beyond me when they see the US as a slave state.

Israel even boasts about how they've promoted unconstitutional anti-BDS laws in the US that punish Americans for exercising their 1st Amendment rights:

I don't think Biden when takes office would continue with these sanctions. These sanctions will get thrown out of the window the moment Biden administrations takes hold of power.

kick out Turkey, a NATO member, from the F-35 program

And why were they kicked out? Because of that stupid deal with Russia to get the S-400. What was Turkey thinking? How could Erdogan, who is otherwise an intelligent man, make such a idiotic blunder? You want to be part of NATO? Stop helping NATO's primary adversary. NATO was formed as an anti-Russia alliance, why is Turkey part of it if it wants to be buddy buddy with Russia. That's why I said Turkey needs to make up their mind and stop dancing on the fence

politics is game of interest and turkey did wrong to take s-400 . many losses for just a missile . wrong move

Then why hasn't Greece, another NATO member, had sanctions placed on it for purchases of the Russian S-300 and their subsequent tests of the system?
Greece carries out provocative S-300 drill on Crete
Greece Tests Russian-made S-300 Air Defense System

Furthermore, why did they sign that stupid deal with the Russians for the S-400? Because the US refused to sell them the patriot batteries and THAAD missiles they requested and were willing to pay top dollar for.

Trump himself admits that the Obama administration made a mistake not selling the air defence systems to Turkey despite repeated calls for it and ongoing threats to their nation that included PKK rocket attacks:
https://tass.com/world/1052019

NATO wasn't formed as an "anti-Russia" alliance it was created to fight the USSR that no longer exists. Turkey isn't even Russia's ally, they have been on opposite sides in Libya and Syria and Azerbaijan conflicts.

These are just lies and excuses given to justify what is clearly hostile intent towards a nation that was supposed to be an "ally" and is being targeted for not kowtowing to Zionists and defending the rights of Palestinians.

Firstly, S-300 is not S-400. S-300 is actually a joke, as demonstrated in how Syria tried to use it against Israel and the system went berserk, downing a Russian craft instead LOL

Never trust Russian technology over American.
And Trump was willing to give Turkey a much better deal if they listened to him and didn't go for the S-400. But Erdogan was stubborn, I think he let his ego come in the way of his own country's national interests.

You correctly point out that Russia is against Turkey and working to undermine it, in the three theaters (Libya, Syria, and Azerbaijan). If only Erdogan realized that before he did the deal with the devil and got the S-400.
On the other hand, Trump backed out of supporting the Kurds, he even called the Kurds terrorists worse than ISIS and said Turkey is justified in going after them. Turkey never had such a friend as Trump, and now probably never will, what a squandered opportunity.

And what has compelled Turkey to adapt such an anti-Israel stance? Another irrational and emotionally driven blunder that is against their own national interest.

What did you Indians get out of your decades old *** licking of west and America in particular? PLA moved in, conquered 1200 sq km of Indians claimed territory and not a whimper from Indian western allies.

my thinking is different
American stretegic policy is made independent of parties.
be prepared to be shocked if Biden takes the sanctions and restrictions to next level.
it was actually Trump who was resisting sanctions until this time and even defended Turkish decision by crticising those eho denied Turkey the patriot sale. I have watched his reaction long ago when Turkey finally went ahead with S400.

WTF with topic headline it says it will not impact helicopter deal with Pakistan where as news body is clearing talking about it will.

Not long ago, ISPR said that there has been positive news regarding Turkish helicopter deal but now it is more looking like that T129 won't make into Pakistani colors. Turkish engines will require time.
Biden will be good with his European counterparts unlike Trump. EU leaders doesn't like Erdogan. So lets see how Biden administration works with Turkey.
