True, Hagiasophia was previously a private property of the Byzantine imperial family. After the conquest, Mehmed Han turned them into his foundation.

Fatih's grandmother, was the Byzantine-Roman Emperor VI. Ioannis's big daughter. The majority of the elements you see in the silhouette of the Ayasofya today are the works of Mimar Sinan. Most of element of structure, including the main dome, has been completely rebuilt. Thus, the Ayasofya has reached today. Most of the pillars you see inside are Mimar Sinan works. The Turks valued Ayasofya so much that it has not even changed its name. It has been preserved as the most precious treasure of Istanbul.

Only the human sculptures in it were removed. However, his revenge was taken 500 years later, Ottoman heirloom many precious artifacts, Hat(Calligraphy), candlesticks, carpets, etc were destroyed, during to museum transformation. The giant plates you see now, also were removed and thrown into the warehouse. These giant calligraphic works showing names of Allah (c.c.), Hz. Muhammad (pbuh) and the descendants Hz. Hasan and Hz. Huseyin(r.a.) and of our four caliphs.

Even the minarets were planned to be demolished, but architectural reports of the period were abandoned because Mimar Sinan planned the minaret to support the Dome. If the minarets were destroyed, the Dome was in danger of collapsing.

He is right. But this is due to the fact that the Turks played a major role in European history. Like our Indian friends they have their Muslim heritage in mind all the time (I think they really miss us ). If Switzerland bans Minarets from Mosques it's their souverain decision if France doesn't want to give back stolen artefacts to Africa it's also their cup of tea. But if Muslims do something in their own country it's international news and must be condemned wholeheartedly!

In Turkey, almost 400 churches, synagogues and havra was renovated or built with state support. This is another matter. The situation of Ayasofya has nothing to do with them, or Pakistan's temple restorations.

I don't care whether Hagia Sofia will be restored to a mosque or not, it is Turkey's internal affair.
But I hope Hagia Sofia will remain open to tourists and reserve its mosaics ( use curtains or something to separate it from praying area and visitor area than just cover it with gypsum).
Anyway, it may save 70 lira for entrance for my future visiting, why not

Actually Erodgan wants support of hardliners in Istanbul. He already lost election from there earlier so its more a political stunt by him to attract local support . That's what some experts believe.

Catholic Crusaders looted, it saw civil wars and dynasty struggles, set on fire, damaged by neglect, damaged in earthquakes and so on...
