Turkey today marks the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, a national holiday, with low-key ceremonies amid security warnings about imminent attacks by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) targeting the celebrations.

The day, which symbolizes the start of Turkey’s War of Independence when the founder of the modern Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, set foot in the Black Sea province of Samsun to initiate the struggle on May 19, 1919, is celebrated across the country with events organized for the youth.

A group of youths gathered at the Uğur Mumcu Park in Samsun on May 17 and marched to the city’s Cumhuriyet (Republic) Square, passing through İstiklal (Independence) Avenue carrying torchlights and Turkish flags accompanied by a marching band. Folklore dances were also performed in the celebration, joined by 500 scouts and 300 folk dancers from all 81 provinces of the country.

Official ceremonies were also held, as Youth and Sports Minister Akif Çağatay Kılıç and Parliament Speaker İsmail Kahraman hosted youths from all provinces yesterday, to mark the occasion of May 19.

Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and outgoing Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu are set to host a delegation of 400 youths to mark the day. The group will initially visit the presidential palace and later be welcomed at the Çankaya Mansion in Ankara.

Anıtkabir ceremony for Nobel laureate

The mausoleum of Atatürk, Anıtkabir, is also open for visits throughout the day, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., as thousands usually flock to the commemorate Atatürk.

A special ceremony will be held between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. for Professor Aziz Sancar, who will donate his original Nobel Prize in Chemistry medal to Anıtkabir. The Nobel laureate said when he won the prize last year that his success was “thanks to Atatürk.”

“I always repeat this. I am a child of Atatürk, his revolutions and the republic. I was brought up by village institute graduates,” Sancar said on May 14, referring to Turkey’s pioneering system of rural education launched more than 70 years ago which introduced coeducational learning and courses on farming, technology, Iiterature and music in some of the country’s most underdeveloped regions.

“I am their product. I gained [the Nobel Prize] through them. The Nobel Prize belongs to Atatürk and the republic,” he added.

Sinan kardeş, Turkish war of independence diye birşey yok. Bunu hangi mal yazıyor. Kurtuluş Savaşı direk ingilizce çevirisi independence değil. Bağımsızlık independence in ingilizcesi.

One of the great things by a great leader.

Yet, it requires a law to protect Mustafa Kemal from criticisms..

At the graduation ceremony of the War College, while giving his certificate to Captain Mustafa Kemal, Ulu Hakan Sultan Abdulhamit Han said, "Ah! You have come at last"...

It was Mustafa Kemal who abolished Hilafet which continued for 13 centuries..

You can't criticise tayip in this country, hell if we can't criticise him then Atatürk should never be criticised. At the end on the day tayip can't be Atatürk finger nail.

I wish we had at least one politician of just half his calibre, now only if wishes were horses................... :(

Ankara valiliği ve Erdoğan hain tayfası 19 Mayıs yürüyüşünü engellemiş. Bundan sonra ne olacak? Bayrağı felan değiştirmeye kalkarlar herhalde.

Atatürk, with all his shortcomings as a human being, was a man of will and strenght. The legacy of Young Turks, Enver Pasha, Ataturk lives on. These guys managed to transform an Empire on the brink of pure destruction to a strong nation

Abdulhamit was a great Sultan as well. He presided over the worst decades of Ottoman when we were in our most fragile state. Reforms in the Tanzimat birthed great minds like Enver and Ataturk. Guys like us who take pride in our history and nation, should show our interest. Setting mere pictures won't suffice

Like any other Person Ataturk had his flaws and bad habits but his love for this nation was above all that's why no matter what this Nation will love him forever. That's why this nation called him- the Father of all Turks.

He managed to save this nation from a complete destruction- he won a war against half of the world powers who were occupying these lands, he managed to move this nation from the middle ages to the new times. He managed to create a Secular Republic from a dying empire stuck in the past. He managed to include Women in our society, he changed our alphabet and increased literacy rates among people, he changed our educational system, our judiciary system, our economy, he created new institutions and etc. He was a great visionary that our nation is lucky to have.

So many years after his death Ataturk is still respected and loved in this society- he is a symbol of freedom, of a better future, a symbol of the Turkish spirit who manages to overcome the hardest problems. He is well respected all around the world and hated by everyone who He crushed. That should say enough how great that man is.

Did you know that he helped the Young Turks,in secret?
Actually the seeds of secularism was already set in Ottoman Empire throught the ''Tanzimat'' reforms, it was a stage of ''Europeanisation'' the Sultans abandoned the old palace and their harem with it, the new buildings had European look, education was being reformed and even decriminalized homosexuality etc.
