Turkey headban scarf - for or against?

This is subject that causes lot of emotions to run wild. But I want to take a poll of PDF Turks. There are two questions to be answered with a simple


(1) Do you support headscarf ban as existed before Erdogan took over in 2002? Yes/No
(2) Do you support the headscarf ban in the Turkish military? Yes/No


Only Turkish members please vote. I am not going to bother counting any Turkish member who has registered today or thereafter. Thanks in advance for your contribution.

People should not forget that AKP, MHP, HDP and other minor parties are against this kind of state intervention on a very personal level. This group makes up about 78-80% of the electorate.

Again, the PDF Turks here are not representative for Turkey's actual socio-demographic composition.

The only major group who supports this ban is CHP. Many liberals and even leftists are against this policy. This ban led to discrimination and radicalization.

Many liberals and secular democrats even argue that this ban is the reason why so many women (~66%) in our society are wearing headscarves in the first place.

I said i will not continue posting on PDF. But, I've come to the conclusion to boycot the Turkish section due to widespread abuse, but i will continue my activity elsewhere. As to your question Kaptaan:

Thanks for that. It never seizes to amaze me that even a gawd damned question that is binary - yes or no will elicit response that is anything but that. And what percentage of Turkish females in Turkey do you see who wear the headscarf? Just a guesstimate will do?

That is really a hard question to answer as it depends very much on which region you are living.
In central Anatolia, say for example Konya (1.5 million inhabitants) or Kayseri (1.3 million inhabitants), my "guesstimate" would be 65-75% in Kayseri and 75-85% in Konya.

But if you take the Aegean region, my guess would be around 10-15%, say for example in Izmir (~4 million inhabitants).

The south eastern region of Turkey has also high rate of women with headscarves.

If I should make a raw guess, overall for entire Turkey, I think somewhere between 50-60%.

I support freedom of headscarves in every part of the society, be it in education or public or military, as I always have.

And I am a Kemalist.

Agreed. Think about the Ottoman Empire and why it thrived for centuries? Because it allowed its citizens to practice their religions however they wished as long as they weren't contradicting state laws. You don't amass support and cultivate respect or authority by denying fundamental human rights. The Ottomans ruled many European states for centuries like Greece. Have we changed their culture, religion or traditions for all those years, even though they broke free from the empire just short of 100 years ago? No
