Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns and other weapons alongside its border with Syria, state television reported on Thursday, days after the downing of a Turkish military jet by Syrian forces heightened the tensions between the two countries.

A small convoy of military trucks, towing anti-aircraft guns, entered into a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost across the border and where Syrian forces and rebels clashed in recent months, TRT television footage showed.

Several anti-aircraft guns have also been deployed elsewhere alongside the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, TRT footage showed.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Tuesday that any Syrian military unit approaching its border will be treated as a direct threat. Turkey's NATO allies have expressed solidarity with Ankara and condemned the Syrian attack but made no mention of any retaliatory action against Syria.

The deployment came before President Abdullah Gul chaired a National Security Council meeting on Thursday, TRT said. The meeting, attended by cabinet members and the military's top brass, is expected to focus on tensions with Syria.

Turkey and Syria had cultivated close ties before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011, but since then Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of Syria's regime and repeatedly called on Syria's President Bashar Assad to step down. Approximately 33,000 Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey.

Turkey is also hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of army defectors who are affiliated with the Free Syrian Army and collect food and other supplies to deliver to comrades on smuggling routes.

A Syrian minister said Wednesday his country's forces may have mistaken the Turkish plane they shot down for an Israeli one.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi was quoted as telling Turkish news channel A Haber in a telephone interview Wednesday that his country did "not want a crisis between Turkey and Syria."

Al-Zoebi said Turkish and Israeli fighter jets were mostly U.S.-made, which may have led the Syrian forces to mistake it for an Israeli jet.

Syria insists the Turkish military plane violated its air space on Friday. Turkey says that although the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria's air space, it was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.

The search for two missing pilots was underway in Syrian waters but hopes dimmed for their survival, Turkish authorities said.

Turkey scrambles jets as Syrian choppers near border

Istanbul (CNN) -- Turkey scrambled fighter jets three separate times Saturday as Syrian helicopters neared the border between the two countries, Turkey's military said Sunday.
The helicopters were in Syrian airspace, but were getting close to the border, the armed forces statement said.
The jets -- a total of six -- were scrambled twice out of Incirlik, and once out of Batman, it said.
The incident underscores rising tensions between the two nations in the wake of Syria's downing a Turkish F-4 Phantom jet on June 22.

Both Syria and Turkey acknowledged the plane strayed into Syrian airspace, but Turkey said the incursion was accidental and quickly corrected.
Turkey's National Security Council said last week the nation would act against "hostile action" by Syria. Turkey also bolstered its forces along the border.
Also, Turkish Prime Minister Recept Tayyip Erdogan said his country was changing its military rules of engagement and would treat a military approach toward its borders by Syria as a potential threat that "will be dealt with accordingly."
The downing of the jet drew sharp condemnation from NATO, but the alliance did not promise any action in response to the incident. Turkey did not invoke the NATO article calling for collective defense of members, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh has said.
A senior U.S. official said Turkey asked NATO members to study a range of ways a no-fly zone could potentially help the situation and ease threats. It was "not clear what, if anything, will be done," the official said last week.
A search for the pilots of the downed jet was ongoing. The wreckage of the plane has also not been located.
A man from the border village of Guvecci, who asked not to be named for security reasons, said Thursday military personnel and equipment had been arriving for the past two or three days. Turkish state television also reported air-defense systems and tanks were among the equipment.

Turkey is not the policeman of the middle-east. Why should we do it? We have our own problems with PKK. No need other sheet.
Why are you afraid of PKK?You are part of NATO.You can act for humanitarian purpose and Turkey certainly has the capability to do that..If you can cause a diplomatic sh!tstorm with Israel just because a ship then why not action against Syrian Government?

It is not our problem if there is a civil war in Syria; the turkish people don't want a war. What has NATO done for us? Why should we on behalf of them. The flotilla thing was a planned; Erdogan did it to gain votes before the elections, and it enabled him to build the NATO radar base, without real retaliation.

It is not our problem if there is a civil war in Syria;.

But it will become your problem what do you do when instead of thousands of refugees you have millions of Syrians trying to get into Turkey to avoid the fighting?
