The General Staff has announced the Denizkurdu-2011 and Efes-2011 military exercises have been cancelled, without providing further details.

A statement released on Tuesday by the General Staff also said a press tour that would have accompanied the exercises and was planned for Wednesday would not take place.

Senior political and military officials used to attend the annual Efes and biannual Denizkurdu military drills, often touted as a show of strength to neighboring Greece, with which Turkey has had a decades-long dispute over the Aegean Sea.

Eleven frigates, 14 assault boats, three corvettes, eight submarines, 14 ships, four warplanes and eight helicopters conducted military maneuvers during a similar drill in the Aegean last year.

Turkey and Greece reciprocally cancelled military exercises in Cyprus last year in the hope of not hurting ongoing peace talks to reunify the divided island, and observers claim the cancellation of the Aegean exercises could be interpreted as similar steps aimed at improving the reconciliation process the two governments started in recent years.
