First two prototypes of Turkish-Indonesian medium tank should be unveiled in 2015 ~ ASEAN Military Defense Review

ANKARA / JAKARTA, -- During a work visit of Indonesian parliamentarians to PT Pindad (Persero) regarding PT Pindad (Persero) cooperation with Turkey for the medium tank, Major General TNI (Purn.) Supiadin Aries Saputra representing his group said: “

This visit was held to gather information and its specifics regarding the development of defense cooperation between Pindad and Turkey, as well as the response from Ministry of Defense and TNI to support the implementation of the cooperation”.

the President Director of PT Pindad (Persero) Silmy Karim, in response to the regarding matter, said that this joint project of Indonesia-Turkey regarding the medium tank had been initiated since long ago, though Pindad analytical skill continued. “This cooperation has been initiated since long ago by the Government, in fact the signing has been done since year 2013.

In manufacturing and testing Pindad is ready. Although, there are some technologies that still need the assistance from partners such as turret and firing control system, navigation system, and self-defense system. We want to make a medium tank with the perfection on the mobility, fire powder, and survivability,” he added.

The schedule to processing project had been made. If nothing went wrong, in 2015, one unit of prototype will be made in Indonesia and another one in Turkey. The communication has been maintained intensively between Ministry of defense of Indonesia and SavunmaSanayiiMustesarligi (SSM), Ministry of Defense of Turkey.

“For the progress of B2B, some of workers of Pindad have been sent to learn the welding technique of aluminum armored that is used as the raw material of the medium tank,” said President Director of Pindad Silmy Karim. He also admitted he felt optimistic that this project would run well in the future. “We are optimistic that medium tank program will run well because the industrial technology capacity of Indonesia and Turkey are good enough,” he closed.

It will probably also be able to swim in the water. the reason they will keep the weight not more than 30T, as FNSS did with KORKUT system which is also 30T and still can swim. It will give huge advantage to Indonesian forces...

Maybe Indonesia's geography plays a role in this. Lots of islands means these tanks will probably need to be carried around on ships. The more weight, the less tanks you can transport.

Indonesia already has these tank carriers (List of tank landing ships - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I wonder how many tanks they can take in one go.

That is an old info, we have made more LST and dont forget 4 of our new LPD

Thanks for that. So do you think the light weight of this tank is based on the geography of Indonesia or are there other factors involved?

Thanks for that. So do you think the light weight of this tank is based on the geography of Indonesia or are there other factors involved?

Our Army in the old days prefers light tank than MBT, but Today we also have Leopard MBT. I think Today with a new turret and ammunition technology, a medium tank can be more effective than MBT according to some military analyst at war situation. The maneuverability and its weight is also quite important aspect to consider of why some nation prefers light or medium tank than MBT.

Beside that, there is also another reason, medium tank can also be converted into amphibious version. For your information, we have one of the largest Marine force in the world, we have around 29.000 Marine troops and will be added gradually in the near future. Our Marine force is also regarded as one of the best unit in our Armed Force beside Kostrad unit (Army/ 27.000 strength) and Kopassus unit (Army Special Force/ 8000 strength )

So as @Kamil_baku has mentioned earlier, this tank is likely to have its amphibious version in the future, so PT Pindad and Turkish company can broaden the market in Indonesia as it can serve both Army and Marine Forces. Previous PT Pindad APV (Anoa) also get converted into amphibious version to serve our Marine needs. It is a very smart move from PT Pindad though.

In term of geography, I believe we have enough infrastructure now to make MBT can function effectively during war, but each tank has its own advantage, so better we combine them. I believe in the future we also can consider to make MBT if we see that it is important to have many of them.
