Turban row: India plans to move UNSC resolution

Similar issues with turban and burqa -- they should not stand in the way of security.

If you are forced to remove a motorcycle helmet, you should be forced to remove a burqa.
If you are forced to remove a hat or cap, you should be forced to remove a turban.

Most security checkpoints, including airports, require people to remove their hat or cap.

burqa covers whole body and face, even a male can hide behind it but in case of turban it does not hide face nor body..
so they both are not similar ,they are very very different issues

In my opinion, for those people removing Turban is same as that of removing extra jacket !!
or may be more political ? as Sarkozy said,
"We have been too concerned about the identity of the person who was arriving and not enough about the identity of the country that was receiving him." – Sarkozy

The only issue with a burqa is the face covering; else it is like a raincoat.

The two issues are identical because they interfere with facial identification of the person.

wrong the turban is removed and checked not because of facial identity but because any thing can be kept inside it which may escape security scanner.

i know sikhs are very sensitive abt their turban, but they also need to understand the security concerns of foreign countries. plus india should also make ways to tell foreign nations abt turban issue, so that they act properly with a sikh while checking their turbans.

Atlast efforts of sikh organisations is paying off ...........
For a sikh turban is more than a matter of pride.....its a matter of identity.......
I read a comment of a fallow India which said that his families security is more than the "pride "of sikhs....
He is saying this thing after so many sacrifices are made for India by the sikhs .......the same country that officially destroyed Golden temple.......the same country which killed thousands of them and no one is found guilty for it.........this is the least the govt.can do for the sikhs........there is anger among the sikh community world wide about 1984
Why cant the India do it?
Why need to fire someone for making the statement?
Cannot their be a security check that britain and Canada has in place for searching turbans????

And remember ,if someone is in danger ,find a sikh ,even if dont know you ,he will still help you

Sad to see my countrymen posting here unable to understand the significance of a turban for a Sikh. Its much more than a head gear and can hardly be compared with a cap. Its pride, an identity, a link with tradition and a reminder of the countless sacrifices made.

But we Sikhs and our bodies are at fault here. True, we are small in numbers but when the first incidents of Sikhs being confused for Muslims and attacked in the aftermath of 9/11 happened we should have awoken to the dangers facing us. We should have been much more proactive in educating the world about our community.

Education and awareness has happened but is restricted to commonwealth countries or countries with sizable Sikh presence. Why is that hardly any such incident is reported from Canada or from UK? The latter has witnessed a terror attack on its soil and should be more stringent when it comes to security measures, right? The difference is awareness, as Sikhs are more than a million strong and well integrated into the society. So its not just security but a lack of sensitivity borne out or a lack of awareness about the Sikh community and the religion.

I do not know if this has been mentioned here, but the issue is not removing the turban per se, but of the turban having to be placed in the same trays in which shoes are also kept. I can definitely understand that, and believe that even if the turban has to be removed, there should be a more dignified way of checking it. Surely that is not too much to ask? Speaking of pat downs, I have many sardar friends, and I know for a fact that they are very sensitive to someone touching their turban, even by mistake.

it is a tricky issue...while in India a sikh would never be asked to remove his turban...it's difficult to enforce our will internationally...they do it as they see it as a security threat...and most people enforcing these laws at the airports have little to no religious education...

very trikey indeed and unfortunately turban and beard have been wrongly associated with Islamic terrorism although both have religious and cultural importance among the people of Asia long before the inception of America, Fox news and NeoCons.

After all these human right laws and anti discrimination laws the west would covertly hit at the customs of the East. Sometimes they would loathe our “smelly food” sometimes they will try to find problems in our “join family systems” and the easiest being the way we dress or present ourselves.

I really wish that the issue with the Turban was wholeheartedly security in nature but sadly I have seen the evidence saying the opposite. The security staff in the west doesn’t only lack the basic religious education but also the basic education of manners & decency in a society. I have personally seen them enjoying insulting the passengers and getting the sad “kick” out of it and then these staff members exchange their notes during their breaks.

Turbans and Arabian Headscarf (Kufia) have had practical usage as well as signify the religion, customs and nationalities in the manner they have been worn.

In the name of security (and the greater good) if removing a turban helps in security & also satisfies the ego of a discerning security staff then so be it. I shall remove mine as well and would even donate it for the cause.

i don't think turban is any way related to islamic terrorism.turban is checked because people can hide anything inside it.if technology available is enough to scan inside turban then it should be used..or else sikhs must co operate with security check in private.

O praa! Nobody trivialised the importance of turban for Sikhs. I think what most of us agree upon is that the security checks should be done in a sensitive manner so as to not hurt the feelings and dignity of a Sikh.

I got the impression that people here were like "too bad, live with it!" and hence my post.

It is good move.. India must protect the rights and sentiment of its citizens..even if they are on foreign lands...for Sikhs Turban is part of their attire, it should treated with respect..the same way I wouldn't like to part with my clothes..every time.. I go to the airport.
Afterall I wouldn't like to be strip searched on airports ..would I..unless I tip off any scanners.
