NEW DELHI: The history of the 1971 India-Pakistan war will never be fully written. Most of the official records of the war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh have been destroyed.
The destroyed files include those on the creation of the Mukti Bahini — the Bangladesh freedom fighters — all appreciation and assessments made by the army during the war period, the orders issued to fighting formations, and other sensitive operational details.
Authoritative army sources said all records of the period, held at the Eastern Command in Kolkota, were destroyed immediately after the 1971 war. This has remained secret until now.
According to at least two former chiefs of the Eastern Command and other senior army officers TOI spoke to, the destruction may have been deliberate.
They say the destruction may have happened when Lt General Jagjit Singh Aurora, the Indian army’s commanding officer on the eastern front, headed the Eastern Command. If true, this would be at odds with Aurora’s image as the hero who led his men to victory and the Pakistan army’s surrender in Dhaka.

The sensational fact that the files were missing became known only recently when the Eastern Command was searching for details of the Mukti Bahini camps in order to organize a reception for Bangladeshi veterans.
The Indian Army had housed the freedom fighters in different camps across India, where army instructors trained them in warfare. Later, Mukti Bahini fighters were part of the operations led by the eastern command.

A senior army source told TOI, “We were looking for the details of Mukti Bahini camps. We wanted to know where all were the camps, who were in charge etc. When those files were not available, the eastern army command launched a hunt for the records of the war. That is when we realized that the entire records are missing.’’
Lt Gen (retd) JFR Jacob, who was chief of staff of the eastern command during the war and later its head, admitted the records were missing, when asked if this were true. ‘‘When I took over as Eastern Army commander in August 1974 I asked to see the records. I was told that they have been shredded,’’ he told TOI. He refused to discuss who ordered the destruction of the records.
The army headquarters and various units of the army may have some records of the war, a senior army officer said.
But the picture will never be complete, he said, adding that military records maintained at the nerve center of operations are crucial if one is ever to construct the full picture.
The details are significant as this operation is one of the great success stories of Indian intelligence and the army.

It could not have been done under Jagjit Arora. Jake was his Chief of Staff.

. .
Both Jake and Uban probably knew who from Delhi gave the actual order. The likes of P. N.
Haksar ?

Very unlikely it happened at that time. Maybe several years later; first Jagjit Arora retired, then Jake was transferred out (he came back as GOC-in-C just before retiring).

Something funny about this account. All the camps were run by the Home Ministry, under an officer whom we all knew. The only records in Fort William could have been details of training given, and of the individual officers detailed for liaison, such as Shabeg Singh, who got into a lot of hot water, crossing over with his trainees on more than one occasion. Until November, it seems that the orders were very clear: scandal was to be avoided at all costs, although everyone and his uncle knew that the provisional Bangladesh government was esconced in a building on Theatre Road.

Anyway, it is a fact, it was widely reported at the time, that the military records were found missing. My guess is that it happened during the tenure of N. C. Rawlley, who came in between Arora and Jake. I would like to believe so, for various reasons. Jake was given to exaggeration, but I don't think he would tell an outright lie.

PS: Interesting you should mention P. N. Haksar. He fell out of favour very soon after Bangladesh, Sanjay Gandhi disliked him intensely. D. P. Dhar sounds likelier; he had a finger in the Bangladesh pie, and oversaw a cabinet minister going to meet the Bangladeshi provisional government, to reassure them on several counts. He also lasted quite long, and outlived Sanjay Gandhi.

. . .
It might also show the extent of the USSR support. And, the terrorist activities of the IA disguised as MB. They even did extreme atrocities like random killings, rapes etc. at the bordering areas while being disguised as Pak soldiers to tarnish their image...
That is exactly how Soviet hybrid war worked. They pioneered the hybrid war. Soviets were deeply involved with everything regarding the 1971 war as they were planning their next move to march Red Army towards Karachi via Afghan corridor. Diminishing American influences in Pindi was another objective as they also recruited disgraced Yahya Khan.

The records were destroyed as they definitively proved that the Pakistani Army were not oppressing or killing bengalis in 1971.

Also how Indo-Soviet axis cooked up a fake liberation movement though their massive hybrid war. Indian soldiers posed as Muktis for instance. It is disappointing that Pakistan government never pushed hard for all lies cooked up by the media.

Truth is, the bengalis were massacring each other in 1971 and the Pakistani Army tried to stop this civil war. The indians got involved, which made the situation worst. Especially since there were only 50,000 Pakistani troops stationed in bangladesh, who were nearly 3000km from the Pakistani mainland. Those destroyed documents would prove this fact.

.
Exactly. No military history can be written without those documents. The Bengali version and Indian version of the 1971 history are both fairly tales.
You don’t deny that Gen Osmani led the formal armed forces supplied by mukti men... and then him being absent from the formal surrender at the request of India?

No sane Bengali disagrees with this, that’s why the traitors are called rajakars... the men who pointed out non Muslim homes or women to be taken to military brothel... (now let’s not get heavily involved about the brothel situation, we all know men... Muslim or otherwise do these in war but what worries me is that Pakistanis didn’t go hunting to **** any girl they met) the rajakars showed the Pakistanis potential traitors and kidnapped women to excuse their lust and help men at the barracks for impunity themselves.

also that’s why oak govt should have listened to mujibs six demands, that to headquarter the navy in bd and expand army presence within East... but all we now do is bad mouth him... tbh it’s men like taJuddin and mushtak who were the enemy
