Trump decries immigrants from 'shithole countries' coming to US

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump expressed frustration behind closed doors with people coming to the US from "shithole countries," sources told CNN on Thursday.

One of the sources briefed on the Thursday Oval Office meeting with lawmakers confirmed Trump asked, "Why do we want all these people from 'shithole countries' coming here?"
Trump, in vulgar terms, rejects bipartisan immigration proposal at White House meeting
A person familiar with the meeting said Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham brought a plan to Trump that involved cutting the visa lottery in half and, at the behest of the Congressional Black Caucus, the rest would go to underrepresented countries in Africa and Temporary Protective Status nations, including Haiti. The person said the language was salty on both sides.

One person briefed on the meeting said when Durbin got to Haiti, Trump began to ask why we want people from Haiti and more Africans in the US and added that the US should get more people from countries like Norway.

A person familiar with what was said at the meeting told CNN that Trump also said: "Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out."

Trump was taping a message in the State Dining Room on Thursday afternoon for Martin Luther King Jr. Day as the story was breaking, an official said. Another official said Trump expressed to aides within the hour that the media was blowing his comment out of proportion.

The Washington Post first reported on Trump's comments in the Oval Office meeting, which the Post said "shocked" lawmakers in attendance.

Reached for comment about the article, White House spokesperson Raj Shah did not deny the "shithole" remark, but instead said in a statement that Trump "is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation."

One of the sources told CNN that White House adviser Stephen Miller was at the meeting, and White House chief of staff John Kelly attended part but probably not all of the meeting.

The Trump administration late last year announced it would end the TPS designation for Haiti, a move that could affect tens of thousands of Haitian immigrants. Likewise, the Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced it would end protections more than 200,000 Salvadorans, and on Thursday the White House rejected a bipartisan immigration proposal, including a fix for people protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

A White House official told CNN the President's "shithole" remark is being received much differently inside of the White House than it is outside. The official said that although this might enrage Washington, staffers predict the comment would resonate with Trump's base, similarly to how Trump's attacks on NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem did.

Neal Katyal, a lead lawyer challenging Trump's attempts to impose a travel ban on mostly Muslim nations, has argued the travel ban reveals a discriminatory intent on the President's part, and responded to news of Trump's comment in light of the ongoing legal battle.

"As I put the finishing touches on the travel ban brief to the Supreme Court tonight, the President's words remind us again of how his un-American racist ideology impacts policy," Katyal said.

The White House denied similarly derogatory remarks in December, when The New York Times reported Trump said during a meeting in June that people coming from Haiti "all have AIDS," that recent Nigerian immigrants would never "go back to their huts" in Africa and that Afghanistan is a terrorist haven.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders denied at the time that Trump had made the comments and cited denials from several of the meeting's attendees.

What a turd. What makes him think people from developed countries actually want to move to America? it's a backward step, high crime, rising right wing, poor healthcare.

'Shame on Trump!' World reacts to Trump's 'shithole countries' remarks

(CNN) - US President Donald Trump's complaints about immigrants coming to the US from "shithole countries" have prompted condemnation from around the world.

In the United States, Democratic and Republican lawmakers criticized Trump's comments as "divisive" and "unacceptable," while Haiti, one of the countries explicitly named by Trump, summoned the top US diplomat there to discuss the President's remarks.

Trump's comments, made at a closed-door White House meeting, were a reaction to a plan to cut the number of people entering the US through its visa lottery program. According to CNN sources, lawmakers proposed reducing the number by half, with the rest going to underrepresented countries in Africa and nations with Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

The furor comes as Haiti prepares to commemorate eight years since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced many more.

As a result of the disaster, citizens of Haiti were accorded TPS, granted to individuals from countries where conditions such as war, natural disasters or political strife prevent citizens from returning safely.
Former Haitian President Laurent Lamothe said the "world is witnessing a new low today" and called Trump's remarks "totally unacceptable!"

"It shows a lack of respect and ignorance never seen before in the recent history of the US by any President," Lamothe tweeted.

As the US ambassador position in Haiti is vacant, the charge d'affaires at the embassy, Robin Diallo, will meet with Haitian President Jovenel Moïse on Friday, a senior State Department official told CNN.

The Trump administration announced late last year it would end the TPS designation for Haiti, a move that could affect tens of thousands of Haitian immigrants. The Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced it would also end protections for more than 200,000 Salvadorans.

El Salvador's Foreign Minister Hugo Martinez responded to Trump's comments by tweeting about Salvadoran contributions to the United States, saying "a good part of those who helped rebuild New Orleans after Katrina were Salvadoran. I feel proud to be Salvadoran."

Meanwhile, US diplomats and the US Embassy in San Salvador sought to assure those in El Salvador of their respect for the country.

Jean Manes, US envoy to El Salvador, tweeted in Spanish: "I have had the privilege to travel around this beautiful country and meet thousands of Salvadorans. It is an honor to live and work here. We remain 100% committed."

The official account for the US Embassy in San Salvador tweeted in Spanish: "The United States is proud to be a partner of El Salvador and we remain firm in our friendship that dates back various decades."

Nepal, which became a TPS nation after a major earthquake in 2015, said authorities were discussing their response to the matter.

The South Asian country's Foreign Minister Bharat Raj Paudyal told CNN "we are aware of President Trump's comments, and our ministry is discussing the matter."

A senior official from Somalia, also on the US list of TPS nations, told CNN that Trump's comments were unworthy of a response.

"It sounds like fake news to me," said Somali Information Minister Abdirahman Omar Osman, speaking by phone from Mogadishu. "If it's real, it doesn't need a response. Those comments do not deserve a response."

On Twitter, former Mexican President and longtime Trump critic Vicente Fox said the US leader's mouth "is the foulest shithole in the world."

"With what authority do you proclaim who's welcome in America and who's not. America's greatness is built on diversity, or have you forgotten your immigrant background, Donald?" he said.

David Miliband, president of the International Rescue Committee and former UK Foreign Secretary, said the "Trump Administration (is) leading a race to the bottom on refugees and immigrants that is a betrayal of America's future as well as of its history."

Trump insulted the continent of Africa in his comments as well, leading to fierce reaction on Twitter.

Kenyan activist and politician Boniface Mwangi said "how America elected a narcissist, racist, white supremacist to be their president defies logic."

"Africa sends love and light to America," he added.

South African journalist Leanne Manas tweeted "good morning from the greatest most beautiful 'shithole country' in the world!"

I disagree. There are many people all over the world especially from poor developing countries who dream of going to the U. S for a better life.
They won't change their minds just because of a silly comment from trump.
Moreover, such comments Should make leaders of such countries to strive to improve their country and peoples living standards as well, so that their people can be respected wherever they travel abroad. Since to be honest, nobody respects poverty.

Developing countries, defintely.

Wealthy countries - under the current circumstances probably less so. America has this incredible image in the world, even people like me who hate it's geopolitical bullying want to visit and see the places we've been told are "THE places to be" and "THE places to see". Currently I'd rather not visit.

Even if i was a WASP, i'd probably not move there, not unless i was moving for a job that would make me a 1%'er. As part of the 99%, you're much better off in Western Europe.

Not entirely true, even though you have a point about some wealthy western European countries. However, even so, there are even some people in Europe who still migrate or move to the US for better job opportunities and other reasons. Only a very select few WESTERN European countries(the vast majority are not) are wealthier than the U. S That's even more surprising considering the U. S has a massive population, almost the entire population of Europe itself.
So we can't just say things just because we are biased or habour some sort of hatred towards the US and it's foreign policy. The U. S is still one of the most advanced, innovative, wealthy, industrialised country on earth. Reason so many countries out there often want to emulate them(even those countries who are considered anti America).

Would you rather be living on minimum wage in the UK/Sweden/Germany/Norway or in the USA?
