Saim Ayub has been declared fit and is set to join Peshawar Zalmi for the 10th edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL 10), beginning April 11.

Peshawar Zalmi has received a timely boost as Saim Ayub, the left-handed opening batter, has recovered from an ankle injury and will join the squad today. He will arrive alongside wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris for the second day of the team’s training ahead of HBL PSL 10.

Ayub had been out of action for more than six weeks after sustaining the injury during the Test series against South Africa in early 2024. Following the injury, he was ruled out of international duties, missing both the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 and the tour of New Zealand.

His rehabilitation program took place in London and spanned a month. It included a range of balancing and strengthening drills such as single-leg squats, tightrope walks, and single-leg jumps. He returned to Pakistan earlier this month to celebrate Eid with his family.

The 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League will commence on Friday, April 11, with defending champions Islamabad United facing Lahore Qalandars in Rawalpindi. Peshawar Zalmi are scheduled to open their campaign a day later against Quetta Gladiators at the same venue.

This year’s HBL PSL features six teams and a total of 34 matches, concluding on May 18. Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will host 13 fixtures, including both Eliminators and the final.

Why did Karachi Kings name David Warner captain over Kane Williamson?

Karachi Kings’ bid to start strong in the HBL 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL) will be without star signing Kane Williamson, who will miss a significant portion of the tournament’s opening rounds, as confirmed by team owner Salman Iqbal

Iqbal was pressed in a recent interview regarding the franchise's decision to sign Australia's David Warner and hand him the captaincy in his debut season wth the Karachi Kings. He revealed that the decision came due to Williamson's unavailability for the first five matches of the HBL PSL X season.

These matches include crucial fixtures against Multan Sultans, Lahore Qalandars, Quetta Gladiators, Islamabad United, and Peshawar Zalmi.

Iqbal joked about Williamson captaining the team through zoom, becuase he was likely to miss a significant portion of the start.

Though Karachi Kings have not provided specific details behind Williamson’s absence, sources suggest that the Kiwi star's IPL commitments may have played a role, as he is expected to be tied up with commentary duties during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Additionally, Williamson is recovering from a quad strain he sustained during the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, an injury that had already ruled him out of recent T20I and ODI series against Pakistan.

The 33-year-old is expected to join the Karachi Kings squad ahead of their match against Quetta Gladiators on April 25, which could mark his much-anticipated PSL 2025 debut.

Notably, Williamson was initially overlooked in the PSL 2025 draft but was later picked up by Karachi Kings in the supplementary round, a decision that many considered a strategic move by the franchise.

PSL 10: Quetta Gladiators name Ali Majid as replacement for Mark Chapman

BR Web Desk
April 9, 2025

The Quetta Gladiators have picked mystery spinner Ali Majid as a replacement for New Zealand’s Mark Chapman for the first few matches of the tenth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 10), the franchise announced Wednesday.

Majid, 33, has been picked to strengthen the spin department. He was previously part of Lahore Qalandars’ talent hunt programme and has played for Peshawar Zalmi, Multan Sultans, and Qalandars in earlier PSL seasons. While he hasn’t had many opportunities at the top level, his performances in domestic T20 cricket have kept him in the mix.

He took four wickets in five matches in the recent National T20 Cup while playing for Multan, with an economy rate of 5.88.

Chapman, who was picked in the Platinum category by Quetta, will not be available for the early matches. With enough cover in the top order, the Gladiators have opted to use this replacement slot to add variety in the bowling attack.

Ali Majid joins a spin group that includes Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq, and Akeal Hossein. While it remains to be seen how many chances he will get, his ability to bowl tight overs in the middle and use variation could be useful on slower pitches.

Quetta Gladiators will begin their PSL X campaign against Peshawar Zalmi on April 12.

Despite the pressures of defending their title, Afridi remained upbeat. “Mistakes happen to humans; we will enjoy the PSL,” he stated.

He stressed the connection between domestic cricket and PSL selection: “After playing domestic cricket, one is selected for the PSL,” he noted.

Afridi also lauded the rise of Haris Rauf as an example of the league's success in unearthing talent. “The Pakistan Super League is our own league; it needs support,” he added.

Peshawar Zalmi skipper Babar Azam echoed the sentiment on league growth, saying, “All franchises in the Pakistan Super League are balanced,” while noting each side’s efforts to build top-quality squads.

“Each franchise in the PSL tries to make the best squad,” said Babar, indicating that this season is expected to be one of the most competitive yet.

Hasan Ali has been appointed vice-captain of the Karachi Kings for the upcoming 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), replacing Shan Masood in a new leadership setup that also includes David Warner as captain.

The right-arm pacer's appointment was announced via the franchise's social media, where the Kings shared a graphic featuring Hasan Ali under the caption, “Hasan Ali proudly takes charge as the new Vice-Captain of Kings squad.”

This is the second change in Karachi’s leadership for the upcoming season, with Warner recently replacing Shan Masood as captain in what will be his debut PSL campaign.

Hasan Ali, who was present at the PSL 10 captains’ conference in Warner’s absence, now steps into the leadership role with both domestic and franchise experience to his name.

The 30-year-old previously led Central Punjab to the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy title in 2020 and remains a key figure in Karachi’s bowling attack. He enters the tournament with 108 PSL wickets in 82 matches at an average of 22.96 and an economy rate of 8.03.

He is just six wickets behind Wahab Riaz, who leads the all-time charts with 113 wickets in 88 matches.

Hasan also holds the record for most wickets in a single PSL season, having claimed 25 scalps in 13 matches during PSL 4 while representing Peshawar Zalmi.

PSL 10: Can Multan Sultans get it right this time?

Former champions Multan Sultans will enter the tenth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as one of the most consistent teams in recent years.

Built around leadership stability and role clarity, the Rizwan-led side has again assembled a squad that balances experience, flexibility, and impact potential.

Rizwan’s anchor role in focus

Mohammad Rizwan’s ability to anchor innings with low-risk, high-consistency batting has underpinned much of Multan’s recent success. Since 2020, he has recorded the second-highest balls-per-dismissal (BPD) figure among batters with 500+ balls faced, just behind Babar Azam.

However, his strike rate of 129.7 continues to raise concerns, especially in a tournament where explosive scoring is often the differentiator.

PlayerInningsStrike RateBPD
Babar Azam53133.041.1
Mohammad Rizwan49129.737.9
Shoaib Malik51134.426.4

Mohammad Rizwan remains central to Multan’s strategy, but the franchise’s title hopes may rest on extracting value from their spin attack and middle-order hitters.

Fast-bowling depth

Despite the presence of David Willey, Mohammad Hasnain, Josh Little, and Chris Jordan, it is 23-year-old Akif Javed who has emerged as a potential leader of the pace attack. The left-armer has taken 35 wickets in the 2024/25 domestic season, trailing only Rizwan Butt.

PlayerOversWicketsAvg
Rizwan Butt94.53616.7
Akif Javed80.33517.1
Taskin Ahmed68.23513.9

Spin department

New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell, Multan’s platinum pick, may be one of the most underrated selections of the draft. The off-spinner has one of the best bowling averages in powerplay overs since 2020 and adds batting firepower lower down the order. His inclusion provides Rizwan with a multi-role option in both departments.
PlayerOversWicketsAvg
Imran Tahir67.02914.9
Michael Bracewell40.41717.4
Manimaran Siddarth83.02817.8

Usama Mir – the game changer

Leg-spinner Usama Mir has become a regular strike bowler for Multan but remains one of the most expensive among PSL spinners. With 59 wickets to his name, his impact is unquestionable, but an economy rate of 8.2 could hurt the team on flat tracks.

PlayerOversWicketsEconomy
Usama Mir155.4598.2
Abrar Ahmed65.0227.8
Liam Dawson84.3217.8

Outlook

Multan Sultans appear tactically well-rounded heading into PSL 10. Rizwan’s stability at the top, coupled with impact players like Bracewell and Iftikhar, gives them the tools for a strong campaign. However, the effectiveness of their spin resources and middle-order strike rates will require close management.

The franchise has made three consecutive PSL finals but fallen short each time. Whether they can go one step further this season may come down to how well they navigate the fine margins that define PSL outcomes.
