News:Indonesia to import 2,500 ships from China

JAKARTA - Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) will import 2,500 units of short sea ship from China aiming to improve the logistics and distribution performance among ports scattered throughout the archipelago, an Indonesia official said here Monday.

Natsir Mansyur, Vice Chairman of Kadin's Trade, Distribution and Logistics division said Kadin has signed the agreement with China and the total of 2,500 units ship worth $5 billion will be delivered gradually within 5 years starting 2013.

"Indonesia's logistic costs are quite high due to the limited infrastructure and armada, we needs to boost the logistics operations," Natsir said, as quoted by Indonesia's news portal merdeka.com.

Transporting goods in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago with 17,000 islands, is very costly due to poor logistics and bad infrastructure. A report released by World Bank shows Indonesia's position in 2012 Logistics Performance Index at 2.94 in the scale of 5, while its rank is in the position of 59, lagging behind its regional peers such as the Philippines and Vietnam.

Yes it is true, Indonesia is a country consists of 17.000 islands, to transport logistic, we need ten of thousands ships. The type of the ships would be short sea going cargo vessels, since these ships will be operated to transport goods domestically, island to island technically.

Indeed, China's industrial might is what we need mostly, the ships are supposed to be completed in time before the logistic prices affect commodity prices. China seems to be the only country that have the power to complete 2500 ships in less than 5 years.

What I see is how fast and amazing the Indonesian economy is growing.

Could be the fast growing emerging nation side by side with Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Philippines coming next are all growing crazy since last year.

$5 billion, that's large. I think the money could completely purchase 1-3 shipyards,iron and steel companies from China industrial, and build them in Indonesia. Well 2,500 ships r GOOD, the best using money to import ship-building technology and start to build more and more Indonesia domestic ships, increase more local jobs and enhance Indonesia economy.

Few days ago, i hear the Egypt and China signed the agreement, China help them to support a big shipyard in Alexander port and teach Egypt to build domesitc cargo ships and small warships. It's a GOOD deal, win-win for Egypt and China.

Anyway, 2,500 ships look crazy for me. Congrats for both Indonesia and China,to make greater progress in economy developing.

Indonesian shipyards are already filled with many orders too, following Asia's economy booming led by China and followed by India, Indonesia, and several Asian countries this recent years, many Indonesian shipping companies ordered vessels to domestic shipyards in order to keep up with the highly increasing demand of goods among all main islands of Indonesia. From what I know, almost all shipyards in Indonesia (except military shipyards) are already filled with orders, and our total shipyards capacity is not as big as China, we may not be able to complete 2500 ships in less than 5 years, therefore we need a country with bigger industrial capacity, and the only promising country is China.

Yes, this is crazy, but as an Indonesian, I will be going crazier if the commodity prices are skyrocketed due to the lack of the number of ships needed to transport them. So far, the Indonesian chamber of commerce alone has 12,600 various type cargo ships and those ships are going to be not enough to keep up with the increasing of Industrial and manufacturing sector in Indonesia, since Indonesia, a country with Islands archipelago, it has no railways to connect one islands to another, therefore we need a numerous number of cargo ships.

Otherwise, I hope for a greater economy, industry, and technology cooperation with China. The only way to build Asia is to get along with the other Asian countries.
