GUWAHATI: Seven cadre of Ulfa (Independent) were recently executed on the orders of the outfit's chief, Paresh Baruah, in Myanmar for trying to flee their base there Two others in the group, who managed to make it to India, surrendered to police on November 20.

Intelligence agencies have confirmed the execution of the seven cadre and said this act of Baruah is a strong warning to others of his camp to prevent them from taking a similar step. "We have confirmed reports about the execution and about the fact that Paresh Baruah himself gave the orders for the same," an intelligence source said.

Police said the two—identified as Siddhartha Dahotia alias Agni and Ratul Bora alias Anupam—who managed to escape while the seven were caught, crossed the border into India and surrendered to Tinsukia police. Soon after Agni and Anupam surrendered, Paresh Baruah's publicity wing issued a statement confirming the escape attempt by nine cadre. The statement added the nine cadre were moles planted in the outfit by intelligence agencies.

"Two of the nine cadre managed to escape with one weapon, but our special operation group nabbed four and killed three. The nabbed cadre have revealed that they were trained by intelligence agencies and they got themselves recruited into the outfit by taking advantage of some loopholes in our recruitment drive," said Joy 'Asom', a member of the outfit's publicity wing.

Although the statement did not say that the remaining four cadre who were caught while trying to escape were executed, intelligence reports confirmed that seven were executed on Baruah's orders.
