Tripura transport minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Saturday stressed the importance of extending connectivity with Bangladesh during an event named ‘Chintan Shivir’, held at Prajna Bhavan here to prepare a ‘comprehensive roadmap’ for development of the state with Niti Ayog.

Speaking on the second day of the event, transport minister Pranajit Singha Roy said that partition caused Tripura to become landlocked on three sides with only one corridor through Assam and West Bengal to the mainland of India.

“People of Tripura had the opportunity to have a meter gauge rail service to Bangladesh to reach Eastern India during the Pre-Independence days. But after the partition, the entire rail track came under Bangladesh which geographically crippled Tripura from three sides by 856 Km. Tripura got landlocked with only one corridor with Assam and Silchar to West Bengal as a link to the mainland. As a result, people of Tripura had to travel 645 Km to reach Kolkata, thus it became isolated from mainland India”, the minister said.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the union railway minister has fulfilled the long-cherished aspiration of Tripura by providing broad-gauge railway services in 2016.

“Presently, there are multiple express trains connecting Guwahati, New Delhi, Kolkata, Deogarh. In near future, we will have direct trains to Mumbai, Chennai etc. Along with express services, people of Tripura can now boast of local trains from Agartala to Dharmanagar (North Tripura) and Agartala to Shantirbazaar (South Tripura) which will be extended to Sabroom in near future”, Singha Roy said.

However, the minister laid stress on using international connectivity with Bangladesh to turn the tables for the geographical bottleneck of Tripura.

“Work of Agartala-Akhaura railway project is in full swing. It is expected to be completed in 2020…. The expansion of MBB Airport into an international airport is under process. Very soon, international flights to South East Asian nations will commence”, he said.

Pranajit also said Tripura’s BJP-IPFT government has taken initiative to introduce inland waterways transport by connecting Gomati and Howrah river with their counterparts (River Meghna) in Bangladesh. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb raised the issue with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari last month at New Delhi.

On the issue, transport minister Pranajit Singha Roy said Saturday that the Union secretary of Shipping has conducted a visit to the state to assess ground situation and feasibility of inland water transport in the state. “Once the DPR is finalized, the inland water transport will become a reality”, he said.

Tripura was never connected with mainland India. It was connected with east bengal without any necessity of going to Calcutta. They should pay more attention to Chittagong connectivity and get connected with the world.

Tripura is ideally a part of Cumilla District (Will be Division soon). Tripuri people totally depends on the mercy of Bangladesh. They use everything Bangladeshi . Soap, shampoo, oil, packaged foods , almost everything. They should send a proposal to Indian central Govt. to gift Tripura to Bangladesh to make it a part of Cumilla Division. :yahoo:

:woot:

Yeah, as if Rangpur is your father's property. Talk about how to alleviate the communication problem of Tripura.
As if Tripura is your dad's property...you just simply wanted India to gift Tripura. The GDP of Bangladesh is just equal to the state of Karnataka and you dream of lifting Tripura out of poverty

GDP of Karnataka is equal to GDP of Dhaka Division.

People here are arguing to merge Tripura with Bangladesh because it's wholly dependent on Bangladesh for its survival, doesn't make sense it being part of India since Indians themselves need access to Bangladeshi ports to reach out to Tripura.

LOL! Having merger dreams? Doesn't matter if the entire state is depopulated, India doesn't cede territories to any country. We will always find a way to connect to the state, with or without BD. You want some money, open up, or shut up, we'll take it through the Siliguri corridor.

Don't get riled up bhai...:-)

They are well aware of their position in the pecking order- even Myanmar showed them their proper place in the region.

Such delusions are a sort of escapism which help them sleep better at night... Let's cut them some slack :D

India has already ceded dozens of enclaves to Bangladesh.

Officially, Bangladesh have never really approached for Tripura because it doesn't have much of strategic significance. End of the day, people in Tripura will have to suffer.

In exchange for lands that are already in India but called Bangladesh. That's not the case for a state with large mineral resources. One must be stupid.

Primarily because BD is a Muslim majority country, and Tripura is not. Not a nice place for minorities to be in.

The net result of that exchange was India ceded 40sq km extra territory to Bangladesh.

Tripura is a small hilly state and doesn't have much of resources.

Well, people from Tripura travel to Bangladesh daily for livelihood, trading, and even education. Better ask them how is Bangladesh to live in.
