Nuclear submarine HMS Vengeance was forced to return to Faslane after suffering a mechanical failure last week, it has been revealed.
The Vanguard class sub, one of four nuclear deterrent submarines, was on a training exercise in the North Atlantic when the propeller became blocked by debris during bad weather on 31 March.
Despite the damage, the sub was able to surface and return to Faslane unaided.
A Royal Navy spokesman told Scotland's Sunday Herald that the problem was a mechanical issue, with no nuclear implications.
"HMS Vengeance was on a training exercise in the northern exercise area when she suffered a reduction in her propulsion," the spokesman said.
"There was a blockage in the propulsor and it was found to have been fouled by an object as a result of which there was a reduction in propulsion. It slowed her down."
"She is returning to Faslane on the surface under her own power. Investigations will take place It is not foreseen that it will have any impact on her programme, at this stage anyway."
