Trial of 3,000 militants begin Aug 1 in Pakistan

The trial will begin here Aug 1 of some 3,000 militants arrested during last year's military operations against the Taliban in Pakistan's restive northwest, a media report Wednesday said.

The militants will be split into two groups, with one lot being tried in Anti-Terrorism Courts and the other in Darul Qaza Islamic appellate courts, Online news agency reported.

The militants had been captured during the April-October 2009 military offensive against the Taliban in the Malakand division of the North West Frontier Province, now renamed Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa.

The operations were launched after the Taliban reneged on a controversial peace deal with the NWFP under which they were to lay down their arms in return for the imposition of Sharia laws in the province. Instead, they moved out of their Swat headquarters and occupied Buner district, which is just 100 km from Pakistani capital Islamabad.

The military says it killed some 3,000 militants during the operations but these figures are not independently verifiable as the media was barred from the area.

With the Malakand division now cleared of the Taliban, the military operations have now shifted to the South Waziristan region along the border with Afghanistan and are also being planned in North Waziristan.

The Darul Qaza courts were established as part of the deal with the NWFP government.

Great news, guud to know that these skunks would be taken to task through the law. Though i hope that they all are given death sentences but then we may see some short-term punishments, which in my opinion should be thoroughly thought out, or else we might see another taliban army re-rising after another 5-8 years.

Though we didnt nip this evil in the bud initially, but now i think we have been given another chance to complete the job, this my friends is how we gonna do it!

But these trials should end in the shortest possible span of time. I don't want to see the same pathetic attitude by our judiciary. The case hanging for years with no result.

Anti terror courts are very fast in this aspect . like they decide the case in matter of days if full evidence is provided.

I have a different solution, member's have right to differ.

Give them life sentences and during that try to show them through there own google (religion), that how misguided they were, try to reform them in prison and after 20 years of punishment release them, most of them by than will be in there late 40's or early 50's.

Than send them to there home so they can reform others, killing them now will bread more militant recruting propaganda.

I hope people see the bigger picture.

not a good idea at all, first of all there is a maximu chances that they can escape from jail within this 20 years time because of high corruption and corrupt officials, secondly, i seriousely have doubt if their mind could be changed, they are ready to kill and be killed, how much more a mind could be twisted? they have reached to the point of no return.
