LOL no japanese ZERO fighter?? They f-ing did the pearl harbour bombing. Not to forget they took down the brits in south east asia.

The Zero was a fast and formidable fighter. It initially pawned Allied aircraft and assets.

Afterwards, the Americans exposed a weakness in them.

Zeros were light. Very light.

I don't know how to explain this...I might sound like a noob.

What the Americans did was that they baited them and dived downwards. Zeros cannot handle that stress for too long. And at some point, they just budged out. And as the Zeros went up, others followed suit.

Gotta love dog fighting

@Topic: The Mustang should be no. 1. It literally changed the tide of WWII in Europe. I don't see just how the Spitfire is no. 1.

How come on a list of all time top ten planes we only see planes older than 1960s. What have been ppl up to after that period? I think it should be list of planes in black and white era

Come on... what are we discussing here ? Fighter requirements are different as we move from one region to another.
eg. It does not even make sense to have single engine fighters for a large country like India with varying climate, we would never go for a single engine fighter.

similarly for other countries.

Raptor is the new muscle kid with no experience on the block. Except for its gleaming muscles, it has nothing to show as of yet while all other platforms shown here have seen some serious actions. Why have Raptor any higher rank than these warhorses that have roughed it out much longer than the Raptor even existed?

Odd that the F-15 was not mentioned. That was the best air superiority fighter of its day. Glad to see the F-4 Phantom is still getting respect. The Zero deserves a lot of respect, though I think it might be just outside of the top 10. Too many US Navy/Marine planes from the Pacific in the first video. They were good, but not top 10 material.

Gents,

It is clear to US by now that this sort of threads are more for criticizing US than for objective analysis. So to make most happy, just put US aircrafts at the bottom of the list or not on it at all. I can confidently speak for all the Americans on this forum that we really do not care if the entire world rate US aircrafts as junk and all who flies them as fools. If anything, we encourage everyone to think this way.
