We produce world's largest pool of doctors and engineers every year from this 8000+ universities.

We have a huge population, shouldnt be surprising if we also have a huge number of universities.

Our universities are only meant to produce doctors, engineers, etc to help with our country's aggregate supply. However we are very weak in our post graguate programs, also our universities lack R&D departments and essential infrastructure. We have quantity but lack quality.

Quality wise, we can only develop our university when our country becomes a middle income earning country.

Over 1200 unis? We don't have that many bro. There is a mistake in the article. We don't have that many universities. I think they also included colleges in BD's case giving to such an high number. Low quality private unis are popping up like mushrooms here but even then we have some 60 private ones. Quality wise we are degrading even in public ones as the current BUET saga suggest.

So no stress on producing graduates in arts, pure science & commerce.

Yup agree with you but the mentality of most bangladeshis i have met is that taking arts is a waste of time unless you want to become a proffesor or teacher in the future. So yeah due to the lack of demand plus our lack of qualified manpower in other fields, less stress is put on arts

I think they had included all kinds of universities in the list...there are different types of universities like- central univ, state univ,deemed univ,private univ,open univ,autonomous institutes ...

Even after including those universities, I think 8400 is totally unrealistic.

Total number of districts in India is close to 700. That means 10+ universities per district??

It's not the quantity, but the quality that counts. Our univs, needless to say, suck big time! We're not even in the first 200 univs in the world where quality education is concerned!

Heey guys let not get into a fight over the number or the quality of universities....
I did graduation back in India and post grad from NZ....
International ranking of universities are done based on the quantity and quality of research paper that each university produces.
Indian Universities rather tend to focus on the employbility of it students...
Very few unis in India produces any useful research papers...
Thats the reason y no unis are there in the top list.
May be in future India will focus on research...

which are best as per Indian std(I know that most of you mock at Indian std. But reality is few( around 100 to 150 universities) are world class, middle level universities are average, & most of low grade of universities just for earning few bucks & supplying human power even of low qualities to the industry.

India is experiencing an explosion of private colleges and unis. Even the road that my house is located on in Ludhiana has like 5 unis. Its good because this will help us quickly educate the masses and get into over 90% literacy. But the quality is being sacrificed.

Since India is massive country we need atleast 200 world class unis and more that 50 in top 500 unis. Till then we can't boast about sheer number of the unis we have got.
