The UGC lists 42 central universities. As of 30 November 2011, the UGC lists 285 state universities. The UGC list from 23 June 2008 lists 130 deemed universities. The UGC list of private universities from 7 June 2012 lists 112 private universities.

As of 22 June 2012, the total number of universities in India is 567. There are universities of some kind in each and every of the 28 states of India as well as three of the union territories, Chandigarh, Delhi and Pondicherry. The state with the most universities is Tamil Nadu with 55 universities. It is also the state with the most deemed universities, numbering 29. Andhra Pradesh has the most state universities (32), Rajasthan the most private universities (25), while Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have four central universities each, the largest number of all the states and territories.

but where is standard of INDIA'S education.....only to have large number of university is not enough ,standard should be upgraded. India used to have good university but now they are lacking.

actually france, england and USA have a large number of international students so they have large number of university

It's not the quantity, but the quality that counts. Our univs, needless to say, suck big time! We're not even in the first 200 univs in the world where quality education is concerned! :undecided:

Both quantity and quality matters. In case of India, If you give me a choice I would give more importance to quantity given the large population. It is better to have 100 state Universities than have 10 IITs. As regarding quality, when competition heats up Universities will have no choice but to improve their quality to attract better students.

I am happy India has a good base to leap forward.
