The government on Tuesday approved the first mass rapid transportation project -- the Tk 20.4 billion Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) -- for massive upgrade of the Gazipur-Airport road to ease traffic gridlock.
The approval came at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) held at the NEC conference room with ECNEC Chairperson Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The project titled 'Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project' will be implemented in four years.
Acting Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam told reporters that the traffic congestion would mostly be reduced once the project is implemented. Under the project, a line would come into operation on the 20-km route from Airport to Tongi.
The Planning Division in a media statement said that the project included the construction of 20-km bus rapid transit line, 31 stations, a BRT depot, seven flyovers and the construction of Tongi bridge. As many as 50 articulated buses will be procured under the project.
Of the project costs, the government will provide Tk 3.89 billion while three development agencies Asian Development Bank (ADB), Agency France for Development (AFD) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) will provide a loan and grant of Tk 16.51 billion.
The government has already signed a deal with Ashok Leyland of India to procure 50 articulated buses.
Islam said a total of eight development projects involving Tk 30.20 billion were approved at the meeting of the top economic policymaking body.
Of the total cost, Tk 13.69 billion will come from the government fund while the remaining Tk 16.51 billion will be available in project assistance.
