TOKYO

Tokyo's cumulative coronavirus cases topped the 10,000 mark on Wednesday ahead of a four-day weekend.

The total reached 10,054 as 238 new infections were reported on the day, topping the 200-mark for the second straight day, Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike told reporters.

Since a nationwide state of emergency was entirely lifted in late May, there has been a surge in the number of new infections in Tokyo and other urban areas across Japan.

In July, Tokyo, which confirmed its first infection on Jan. 24, has seen triple-digit single-day new case totals on all but two days. A record of 293 cases was reported Friday.

On July 15, the metropolitan government raised its pandemic alert to the highest of four available levels, indicating "infections are spreading."

Meanwhile, Osaka Prefecture confirmed 121 new coronavirus infections Wednesday, its highest daily tally, Gov Hirofumi Yoshimura said.

About 70 percent of the cases involved people in their 30s or younger, a sign that infections were spreading in entertainment districts, according to Yoshimura.

The previous daily record in the prefecture was 92 logged on April 9.

Since a nationwide state of emergency was lifted in late May, the number of cases in Osaka had fallen before an uptick in July, with more than half of cases involving untraceable routes.

As of Tuesday, Osaka had confirmed a total of 2,541 cases.
