To boost ties, India mulls relaxed visa norms for Iran
High-level meeting planned in South Block later this week to discuss the matter.

Months after National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval’s Iran visit, the government is all set to liberalise its visa policy for Iran, with deliberations now on to remove it from the Prior Referral Category (PRC), a senior government official said. The move is being seen as a goodwill gesture from India to one of its most trusted allies in Central Asia.

Tehran and Delhi have agreed to facilitate development by promoting cooperation in various fields including ports, north-south corridor, petrochemicals, steel industries, pharmaceuticals, and medical equipment.

Besides Pakistan, Bangladesh and China, there are a few other countries that have been put under the Prior Referral Category for granting visas to their residents, which means that visas are issued by the respective Indian missions and consulates after running a thorough background check on individual applicants.

“We are still contemplating whether to remove Iran from the PRC list or not. Deliberations are still on, but there is an inclination to exclude it from the list,” said a senior government official. A high-level meeting is planned in South Block later this week to discuss the matter.

The decision also comes in the wake of an agreement reached between P5 (USA, UK, China, Russia, France) plus one (Germany) countries and Iran to cap the latter’s nuclear programme.

“The agreement, which is yet to be signed, could lift economic sanctions on Iran in the future and India does not want to be caught napping on this. We are making efforts to strengthen ties with the country even before the West does so,” said another official.

An official explained that not all categories of visas for Iran nationals were under the PRC category. “The idea is to bring in a liberalised visa regime for Iranians, as they have never been a threat to India’s national security,” said the official.

During his visit to Iran in February, NSA Doval had underlined the need for widening cooperation between the two countries in fighting terrorism. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj is likely to visit Iran later this year.

With a nuclear deal around the corner with Iran, India will have lot to gain especially with respect to crude oil import after trade embargo on Iran is lifted.
Historically India has had very good diplomatic relations with Iran and there is no reason why trade and other relations suffer when India hasn't had any diplomatic problems with Iran.

Excellent step, we should ensure VISA on arrival for our Iranian brothers.

While visiting as a tourist to Genting Highland in Malayasia, I found my bus from Singapore is filled mostly with Iranians. From the Guide also we came to know that Malaysia is a favorite destination for Iranians because 1) It is a peaceful Country (of course Islamic) 2) They love mountains 3) I don't know if it is true, but the guide said they love Gambling!! And BTW the outside of Genting is closed for renovation for a 20th Century fox studio.

So in order to attract them we must present our hill/mountain resorts in Iran. India has first two points (not Islamic though). But for 3rd one.....err....I don't know. Any Idea where they can enjoy that?

@anant_s @levina ???

Once again an step forward

Hopefully this will be just a start, we can engage further by student exchange program, joint development in scientific area. And Iran can access our thorium based nuclear reactor, while Iran can be our gateway to central Asia.

Logon ko hi sudharna padega, government can't go everywhere. Civic sense comes from within.

I remember sometime back i went to Sikandara (an old Mughal time monument on outskirts of Agra). The place has lot of wildlife including Indian Langurs. Tourists who visit the area often bring things like bananas for them and sometime they even pose for photographs.
On the said day, i saw a set of Japanese tourists doing the same and gave fruits to herd of Langurs. Afters langurs finished with the goodies and let the place in mess, the tourists cleaned the place with the staff manning the monument. they even had brought bean bags. I could only bow in respect for those people.
Hopefully one day, every common man in India will have this sense of cleanliness. That day our Bharat will be truely Swachch.
