Let’s imagine the horror of a stranded man witnessing his wife taking her last breaths, imagine the pain of students who missed their exam and their year-long hard-work went down the drain, while, putting their bright futures at stake. Imagine helpless women, men, children and elders being stuck in vehicles for hours due to road blockages. Can you imagine the agony of a defenceless man whose hard-earned car was set alight and left to burn on the roadside? The terrified mothers waiting anxiously at the doorsteps for their daughters to reach home safely from their universities/colleges. It didn’t really end here, the misery of the troubled citizens continued for days in the wake of Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan’ (TLP) protests. From Urban to rural populace, the politically naïve students, professionals and labour in the country, who didn’t have any prior cognizance pertaining the far-right religious-political party, started giving their viewpoint on the countrywide lock-down caused by the newly emerged TLP. One has to extol TLP for its devious strategic planning.
The TLP supremo – Khaddim Hussain Rizvi, by hitting the sensitive chord of Blasphemy, initiated a sit-in for the amendment in blasphemy law in 2017 and held country-wide protests following the acquittal of Asia Bibi by Supreme Court in 2018. There is no doubt that the aforementioned religion card helped him pave his way into the mainstream political world. Whether negatively or positively, the political brand – TLP, with its nation-wide protests for the cause of Blasphemy law and Aasia Bibi acquittal successfully earned prominence by making its way to the national and international media. It is not an arduous task to gather support for matters pertaining religion, that too, in a country, where religious matters are taken sensitively, where religious activists and their henchmen do not hesitate to murder innocents with an allegation of blasphemy. The most vulnerable to radicalization amongst these are 32% of uneducated youth. TLP cleverly used these vulnerable segments of society for their personal gains. Following Aasia Bibi’s acquittal, bringing in use the modern means of communication, the TLP social media brigade took on to social media to carry out unabated hate propaganda against the state machinery. A glut of unfounded allegations was hurled at judiciary and military. The hateful social media messages inflaming an environment of hate and violence in the country was a sheer demonstration of how these zealots exploited the religion to disrupt the communal harmony in the country for the fulfilment of their nefarious agenda.
The ruthless supporters choked the major cities which brought the economic activity in the country to a standstill, due to which the country suffered a loss of Rs. 150 billion. Moreover, the unruly supporters of the extremist party, vandalized private and public property, collectively causing damage of worth Rs. 260 million.
The question arises that how can the honour of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) be protected by going outright against his preaching? Keeping in view the culture of intolerance and violence that the hardliner TLP is promoting, one can easily establish that the stance and actions of the TLP are clearly against the teachings of Islam and the Holy Prophet.
It is unfortunate that the ones who proclaim themselves as the true adherents of Islam are the ones, whose actions are similar to that of the enemies of Islam. It is a dilemma, that these self-styled guardians of Islam by exploiting the religion are misguiding the people through their skewed view of Islam, Sunnah and particularly the blasphemy issue.
