Now members here are going to suggest that the Mauryan empire is not Indian

Then how come most of you Indians are not Buddhists.

Buddhism is a separate religion from Hinduism. For Buddhists, Buddha is their God. Hinduism has many gods. And Buddhists are allowed to eat cow's meat. Among many differences between the two religion.
Omar dont talk stupidity if u dont know anything about a religion...Buddhist in reality should be Pure vegetarian... but now diferent buddhist school teach different thought about the diet & buddha is considered as a Avatar of Vishnu...& buddhism spread around the world during the time of Ashoka the great...

The point is, that he was not an Indian. He was born in what is now Nepal.

Being an Indian and being a Hindu are not the same thing. Nepal has a lot of Hindus too.

Using this logic of "maximum" followers. Islam can be thought to have come from Pakistan rather than Saudi Arabia

Buddha was not born in the Mauryan empire. He was born in his father's kingdom. When India was many kingdoms.

Ashoka the Great did put stupas in the place where Buddha was born, where he achieved enlightenment, etc, etc.

.
& buddhism is not a religiom...Its a way of life like Hinduism...& statue of buddha is kept for respect not for workshipping & buddhist even workship Mahavishu ,devis & even lord Shiva...

Both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are Muslim majority popolutions. While India has only 0.8% of its population following Buddhism and you are claiming Buddhism as yours. Then why not most of you Indians follow Buddhism if you claim it an Indian religion. Why only 0.8% of your population follow this religion and Im assuming that 0.8% population belong to the areas disputed with China.

China has a much larger population of Buddhist followers than India. both population number-wise and population percentage-wise.

Hindus consider Buddha a God.

Hindus consider Buddha a God.

Yep and so do you Hindus consider a cow a god. Does that make Hinduism and Buddhism one religion?

Buddhists eat cow meat, they dont worship cow.

And Buddhists dont have a caste system like Hindus have.

Hindus have many gods, not only one.

So what if its a small % of the Indian population? Jainism and Sikhism is also a small % of the population in India. If some other nation surpassed China in number and percentage wise of Taoists in the country, China cant claim it still? Load of sh*t.

Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism are all eastern Indian religions, period.
