Three U.S. Military Commanders To Visit Bangladesh

Well, BD does not have the capacity at the moment to be a regional military power, but it can surely be an economic power of the future. BD cannot be a direct party in a regional conflict. Its only option is to be strong enough to resist a sudden imposition of its neighbours' illegitimate will on it. Maritime security and imposition of its jurisdiction on its rightful Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal are the two priorities that cannot be overlooked.

Our neighbours are always there to infringe upon our right, because we have neglected our military strength in the past. A few small gunboats from USA will not certainly make us a superpower. It is just a token gesture, but such a gesture has its effect on our neighbours. We should not be in an illusion, but I think, a good relationship with USA does not put us in a position worse than our present position. Being a small, overpopulated and small country, we do not have many options. But, a good relationship is not the worst of all those options, if not the best.

Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Sean Pybus is on a mission to Bangladesh to strengthen bilateral ties and talk security in Dhaka. Pybus assumed command of U.S. Special Operations Command's Pacific division in June after a long career as a Naval Special Warfare (NSW) SEAL officer.

Pybus will meet with the Army, Air Force and Navy Chiefs of Staff and other senior Bangladeshi government officials on issues related to U.S. security and counter-terrorism cooperation.

"His meetings will focus on interoperability, readiness in the region, security force assistance, and bilateral approaches to maintaining regional stability," according to the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka. The visit underscores the importance of cooperation on security and counter-terrorism between the U.S. and Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim country that borders India and Myanmar.
