Three militants convicted by military courts were executed on Wednesday at a high security prison in Sahiwal, read a statement issued by military’s media wing.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, the militants were involved in committing heinous offences relating to terrorism, including attacks on armed forces and law enforcement agencies.

The military courts, in their two-year tenure, handed over a total of 161 death sentences of which 21 have been executed so far, said ISPR.

Sharing details of the executed convicts, ISPR said that two of the convicts — Said Zaman Khan and Muhammad Zeeshan — were members of banned outfit Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami. While the third convict was member of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

All the three convicts were found guilty of attacking armed forces and law enforcement agencies, said ISPR.

They admitted their offences before the magistrate and the trial court and were subsequently awarded death sentences, the statement added.

The execution of militants convicted by military courts had resumed after a gap of nearly one year as five members of the banned TTP were hanged in the district jail earlier this month.

During its two-year constitutional life, the military courts, set up to try civilians charged with terrorism after the carnage at the Army Public School in Peshawar in 2014, have convicted 274 accused. Of them 161 were awarded death sentence and 113 prison terms, mostly life imprisonment.
