Three MiG 21, MiG 27 squadrons to be phased out this year

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

New Delhi:
Three squadrons of the aging MiG 21 and MiG 27 fighter jets are set to be phased out this year even as Indian Air Force focuses on cannibalization to keep the serviceability rate of its aircraft high.

Top defence sources said that while three squadrons, 18 aircraft each, will be pulled out due to the end of their life cycle, an additional squadron of the Su-30 fighter aircraft is expected. The planes - MiG 21s and MiG 27s, were bought from Russia in the 60s and 70s.

Senior Air Force officials are hopeful that the government will quickly wrap up the ongoing negotiations for 36 Rafale jets with France even as they await the Mark 2 version of indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas.

"As we phase out a particular squadron, we need to bring in at least another squadron to keep the current strength. To reach the sanctioned strength, we need to induct more," the sources said.

Air Force currently operates 35 squadron even though the sanctioned strength is 42. The sanctioned strength for a possible two way fight - Pakistan and China combined - is 45. While no one was willing to come on record about whether the force is content with the 36 Rafales instead of the earlier 126, a senior official said "At least in this government we are getting 36. The UPA was there for 10 years and nothing was decided".

The Air Force is hopeful that the government might go in for more Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft than the 36 Rafales that have been decided. Talking about serviceability (aircraft available for operation), the sources said the force was depending on 'Christmas tree' to keep it high.

Christmas tree is a term used by the Air Force in which parts of one aircraft are used as spare parts to keep the other running, a practice also known as cannibalization. "But even the parts of each aircraft have their own life cycle and service requirements. It is not as simple as one would imagine," the sources said

So These squadrons will be phased out without any replacement then. Reducing IAF furthur.
No Su30 cannot replace Mig21 as interceptor. India has no current replacement for those 21s.
And Pakistan china combined strength is 45 squadrons?:confused::confused:

Lying to Indian masses is so easy i suppose.
PAF alone have 20 squadron strength while PLAAF Alone is a bigger Airforce then IAF.

Whats forcing IAF to go for Cannibalization to keep fleet in service? Is it the obsolescence of the aircraft as supplier are no more manufacturing those parts/components or its just the attempts to make most of the available inventory instead of spending more money? If the later part is true then it would indeed be a mistake by IAF to detach from OEM just so. But i guess we are talking about Non Bison version of Mig-21 here.

PLAAF can only employ 15-20 squadrons max from its airbases within effective operational range near indian border and maintain any respectable sortie rate. Also due to operating from high altitude of tibet plateau most of these aircraft will be handicapped to 1/3rd of their actual load and range, climb.Try to take geography into context before making statements.

Only modern aircraft PAF has is 3 squadrons of Jf-17 and 67 f-16s in 4 squadrons.Rest are obsolete fighters which we can match with our obsolete fighters. At least our Mig-21bisons have BVR capability.
As for those f-16s and jf-17,3 squadrons of mirage -2000 upgraded and 4 squadrons of upgraded mig-29s will be enough to keep them in check.Plus we have 45 odd mig-29ks from the navy to use if need be from the flank.

This leaves our entire 220 su-30mkis to be turned to the chinese front if necessary.Ofcourse not all will be used there, but a bulk can be if needed. Our situation is less than optimal but FAR from hopeless.

To replace Su-30MKI .... Tejas is worlds most advanced fighter jet
no sirji you are wrong LCA tejas will replace Mig 21 & mig 27 as a single tejas can perform tasks of a mig 21 and a mig 27 simontainosli

i cant understand pakistani fanboys feitish to redikule Tejas but let me share some facts

1. Teajas has 3 wet 4 dry hardpoints with one for pods

2.tejas can carry in acsess of 3.5 tonnes of wepons while it still can take off and land on very short runways

3.tajas even with full load is capable of having a sustained supersonik speed at any altitude

4.tejas is bieng tested in three difrrent formats/versions & 8 diffrent prototypes since 2001 and has cleared all kinds wepons tests in all kinds of terrain and all kinds of weather tests and cleared IOC 2 and is inducted in IAF while FOC is salted for dec2015

5.tejas has EL2032M MMR radar which in its current configration can track a 2metere square RCS target at 80Km and can track 18 targets simontaniuslli while engage 4 of them at any given time

6.it is intigrated with DASH HMDS which has more than 90degree off bore sight capability meaning a tejas pilot can lock on his python 4/5 at 90degree angle by just lloking at it

7.all kinds of PGMs , LGBs and dumb bombs are intigrated and tested on it in all types of terrain and weather conditions

8.its already been intigrated with israeli python 4/5 and derby air to air missiles while Derby ER LRBVRis in process of intigration into it

9.a new prototype is under testing with a new AESA based indian made EW suite and radar"UTTAM" with a new improved cockpit layowt

so in short pakistanies like you can make as much fun of tejas as you like but fact remains indian PMO & DM have made it clear Teajs as designated replacement of Mig 21 & 27 and Jags in future

Can HAL make the necessary spare parts,
im sure HAL used to Assemble Mig 21's back in 90's.
these jets should only be phased out once the Tejas or the Rafale Squadrons are there to replace em.

IAF baboons want to pressure GOI.

HAL used to manufacture Mig-21s, not just assemble. But it is uneconomical to manufacture parts for airframes that are about to be retired. Makes more sense to cannibalize.

I hope LCAs replace them and the 36 Rafales are inducted too ASAP.

I suspect even the numbers gap between the PAF and IAF will continue to shrink. Well talk about LCA when it enters service, has the Rafale contract been signed yet or we in for another few years of negotiation.
