Three follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft

Launched today at GRSE Kolkata

Three Follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (FO-WJFAC) for the Indian Navy were launched today at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata by Smt Medha Murugesan, wife of Vice Admiral P Murugesan, AVSM, VSM, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.

In accordance with the traditions, invocations from Atharva Veda were recited and Smt Medha Murugesan applied ‘Kumkum’ on all three ships and named these ships as ‘INS Tarmugli’, ‘INS Tilanchang’ & ‘INS Tihayu’. She wished the ships good luck and launched the vessels. The names of the ships are based on picturesque places in the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal.

Vice Admiral P Murugesan, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, who was the Chief Guest during the occasion, asserted that Indian Navy has been the torch bearer in the drive for indigenous construction of warships and acknowledged the role of GRSE as a reliable partner in pursuing the national goal of ‘Make in India’. He extended warm felicitations to the entire team of the GRSE for their significant contribution towards meeting the Navy’s growing requirement of state-of- the art warships.

These follow on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft are powered by the latest 4000-series of MTU engines, along with advanced machinery control system and water jets and can attain a maximum speed of 35 Knots. The craft would also have the latest communication equipment and radars which would enable effective surveillance. These follow on ships have higher power generating capacity of 280 kW, enhanced capacity of RO plant from 2 TPD to 4 TPD among many other features as compared to the Water Jet Fast Attack Craft already in service. The indigenous CRN 91 Gun with Optronic Pedestal gives them the requisite firepower to undertake their basic role of patrolling effectively. Two of these ships are scheduled to be delivered to the Indian Navy in this year.

Launching of FO-WJFACs Yard 2109, 2110 and 2111 (out of the four contracted), designed in-house, and built by GRSE, Kolkata for the Indian Navy is yet another milestone in India’s quest for self-reliance in shipbuilding

Last Updated: Tuesday, June 30, 2015 - 16:25

Kolkata: Hailing the country's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, Vice Admiral P Murugesan, Vice Chief of the Navy, on Tuesday said that 48 warships were currently under construction in Indian shipyards.

These 48 ships being manufactured for the Indian Navy include aircraft carriers, frigates, destroyers, submarines, corvettes and fast attack crafts.

The vice admiral was speaking at the simultaneous launch of three Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (WJFAC) at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) here.

"It is a proud reflection of our indigenous capabilities that we are building all kinds of warships. GRSE has so far built 94 ships for the navy," added Murugesan.

The three WJFAC - Tarmugli, Tillanchang, Tihayu - are named after Andaman and Nicobar group of islands, and are among the four such warships being built by GRSE.

GRSE chairman and managing director Rear Admiral AK Verma (retd) said two of the three WJFACs will be delivered for commissioning in the last quarter of the year.

With a displacement of around 315 tonnes, the ships are designed for a maximum speed of 35 knots with an endurance of nearly 2,000 nautical miles at 12-14 knots.

Powered by the latest 4,000-series MTU engines with advanced machinery control system, the ships will be fitted with CRN-91 indigenous 30mm gun with optronic pedestal and have the latest communication equipment and radars to enable effective surveillance.

The WJFACs are ideally suited for interception of fast-moving surface craft and will perform anti-smuggling, fishery protection and search and rescue operations.

Navy to get four Water Jet Fast Attack Craft in 2015-16 - The Economic Times
KOLKATA: The Navy would get four new Water Jet Fast Attack Craft by the end of March, 2016 for conducting attack missions, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and rescue operations, officials said today.

The Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) is building the four warships in its Kolkata yard.

Commodore Ratnakar Ghosh, Director (shipbuilding), GRSE, said that two of the ships would be delivered to the Navy by December and the third one two months later.

"We are trying our best to deliver the fourth one also by March," the official told PTI.

The ships are meant for attack missions as well as patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and rescue operations carried out by the Navy.

A formal launching ceremony of the three Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC) was held today. They have been named- Tarmugli, Tillanchang and Tihayu - after different islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

Two of them are also expected to participate in the international fleet review to be held in Visakhapatnam during February, 2016.

After launching into the sea, fitting out of equipment and ship systems would be completed and the ships would be put to sea for trials before commissioning.

These ships are an improved version of fast attack craft built by GRSE from 2009 to 2011.

The WJFAC are powered by the latest 4000-series MTU engines with advanced machinery control system.

The craft would have the latest communication equipment and radars to enable effective surveillance.

The ships will be fitted with CRN-91 indigenous 30mm Gun with Optronic Pedestal to give them requisite firepower for effective patrolling.

"Kamorta-class anti-submarine warfare corvette Kadmatt will go for sea trials next month and we hope to deliver it by August. This ship will also participate in the fleet review," GRSE officials said.
