Instead, my supposition is based upon a similar episode recounted in Inside the Aquarium, a memoir by a defector from the GRU (Soviet military intelligence). He tells how the KGB colony in his embassy - the GRU's competition and sometimes mortal enemy - threw a big party when they managed to kidnap and return to the Soviet Union a Soviet sailor who had jumped ship: "They certainly knew how to kidnap people, but what about plans for enemy tanks and anti-tank missiles?" - is how he put it, I think (I don't have the book in front of me).

Seems like Russia never forget their own citizens if they are a Russian national quite patriotic in some respect, interesting to note that Russia thought he was fixed up and not guilty though.
