What's new

The Type 076 is under construction right now

A similar concept to a planned but never build US design; the affordable medium carrier. Going be the basis for a Chinese carrier force for Chinese UN operations; South Pacific, Indian Ocean and in the general Global South.

A similar flight deck design to the American one, would allow for the placement of a second catapult much further aft. Making it a “long launch position”; allowing for heavier ISR and resupply assets like fixed wing AEW, Fixed Wing ASW and refueling unmanned aircraft.

Mid 2024 is probably a realistic time frame. If it can get export orders to counties like Brazil, it might even operate Gripen NG in Brazilian Naval service.

If Pakistan’s economic recovers by the end of the decade, it maybe an ideal platform to protect the SLOC between Karachi/Gwadar, and Djibouti and the Suez, if part of a grander vision of Pakistan’s foreign policy (having the ability to independently protect our trade in a volatile world). But that is a possibility for the late 2030s if we are serious about getting our act together. At that point, I’m sure the PN would want to operate the J-35 on it, so for the PN they would want at least two catapults to be able to launch enough fighters in significant numbers and quickly .

A more compact island similar (but possibly slightly smaller/less wide) to the one on the Type 003 could save deck space, over the design used on the Type 075, and perhaps the extra space could allow for a second catapult at the front of the deck.

For the US medium carriers didn’t make sense, doctrinally, during the Cold War where speed and range in reaching the battlefields and hunting Soviet subs, where more important.

For the PLAN, medium carriers especially for a well deck seem designed to support PLA marines. Similar to large American LHDs today.

Now the US is studying the “Lightning carrier concept”
