The unholy alliance of Nawaz, Osama, Gul and Khawaja

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: After claims of close ties between Osama bin Laden and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif by the British author and journalist Simon Reeves, a former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) officer named Khalid Khawaja has revealed similar facts during his interview to different media outlets including a Pakistani TV channel.

According to the information given by Simon Reeves in his book “The New Jackals: Ramzi Yousaf, Osama bin Laden and the future of terrorism”, backed by that of Khalid Khawaja, Bin Laden not only sponsored the election campaign of former prime minister and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif in 1988 but paid him large sums of money to ensure protection of Al Qaeda operatives in Pakistan and to “Islamise” the state and society.

Khawaja, who also runs a non-government organisation with the name of Defence for Human Rights, has claimed in an interview to a local TV channel that Bin Laden had held five meetings with PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif.

He further stated that he had arranged these meetings between the Al Qaeda leader and Nawaz on the former prime minister’s request. He also said that he could produce evidence of these meetings to counter the denial by PML-N spokesman Siddique ul Farooq who said that no such meetings ever took place.

However, Khawaja denied that he ever stated that Osama gave more than Rs 500 million to Nawaz Sharif. He said hopefully Nawaz Sharif would not “tell a lie” in this regard, and added that the statement of PML-N spokesman Siddique ul Farooq was untrue that no such meetings had taken place.

Khawaja said that he used to be a close associate of Bin Laden in the past and might have met him more than a hundred times but he never met him after the 9/11 terror attacks.

A blogger at ABCNews.com had previously quoted the former ISI official as stating that Nawaz took a million dollar payoff from Bin Laden for turning a blind eye to Al Qaeda operatives in Pakistan.

ABC News also confirmed the same incident of payoff by quoting former FBI agent Jack Cloonan who used to interrogate one of the key Al Qaeda operatives in US custody, Ali Muhammad.

Cloonan, who is currently working as an ABC News consultant, claimed that Ali had once told him that Bin Laden paid Nawaz’s representatives $1 million for not cracking down on the militants in the Northwest Frontier Province.

Simon Reeves states in his book that after re-establishing Al Qaeda, one of Bin Laden’s first actions was to try and guarantee the security of his men living in Pakistani refugee camps by throwing money at the election campaign of Nawaz Sharif, “an energetic Pakistani politician” standing for the election of Prime Minister.

He also states in his book that Nawaz had received the money from Bin Laden with a promise to convert Pakistan into a strict Islamic state
.

An American website named History Commons Website has not only confirmed Cloonan’s claim but has also mentioned another book by Scott-Clark and Levy, claiming that General Hameed Gul had contacted Osama Bin Laden who was then known to provide financial support to the Afghan mujahideen, to pay for a coup and assassination of the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

[/COLOR]No justification for holding referendum on NWFP renaming: ANP

* Party president says PML-N ‘enemy’ of Pushtuns

By Zakir Hassnain

PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) said on Wednesday there was no justification for holding a referendum on the NWFP renaming issue as demanded by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and thus the ANP rejected it, saying only the constitutional committee of the parliament could decide the issue.

The ANP said the Nawaz League’s criticism of the ANP and its attitude towards Pakhtuns was condemnable. “Nawaz League is the enemy of Pakhtuns and still following the policies of Ranjeet Singh,” said ANP Provincial President Afrasiab Khattak while addressing a press conference along with party leaders Arbab Tahir Khalil, Arbab Najeebullah, Arbab Tajuddin and others.

Khattak said the renaming of the province was an important issue and the provincial assembly had already unanimously passed a resolution demanding the province be renamed Pakhtunkhwa.

The ANP leader said the issue was under consideration in the parliament’s constitutional committee working for constitutional reforms. However, he added, the PML-N leaders made the issue public instead of solving it within the constitutional committee and started giving public statements on issue.

Khattak said NWFP, FATA and PATA were no names. “It’s only Pakhtunkhwa but attempts are being made to make it controversial,” he said. Khattak said the PML-N made a demand for a referendum on the issue. “I propose referendums be also held on the name issue in Punjab and Sindh as only one language is not spoken in a province,” he said. He said there are a large number of Seraiki speaking people in Punjab and therefore referendum should also be held there.

Khattak said no referendum was held when Lyallpur was renamed to Faisalabad and Montgomery to Sahiwal.

The ANP leader said the largest political parties had also acknowledged the name Pakhtunkhwa and the name is no longer controversial. Khattak said the people of the province supporting the Nawaz League should review their party affiliation as “PML-N is the enemy of Pakhtuns.” He said the name Pakhtunkhwa was the demand of the people of the province.

Khattak said the name Afghania was also acceptable as it was given to this region by the founders of Pakistan. The ANP leader said Abasin was the name of a river and Khyber the name of an area and therefore could not be accepted as name of the province.

“We can only accept Pakhtunkhwa or Afghania
,” he said. Khattak said the ANP is cooperating with the parliament’s constitutional committee and wants to solve the problem within this constitutional body. “And if it could not solve the issue, we’ll stick to our stand and demand,” said the ANP provincial president.

Just on the title of the thread, OBL is wanted by the Saudi Authorities and they have been quite active (though quiet) in breaking up the Al-Qaeda network.

Yes, the Saudi don't want Wahabi/Salafi militancy in Saudi Arabia, but they seem quite allright with it in Pakistan - funding for the organs that propagate Wahabi/Salafi ideas in Pakistan come from Saudi Arabia primarily, though funds from UAE are also said to be significant.

Saudi Arabia owes not just Pakistan, not just Muslim majority countries but the world, to completely destroy the ideology which originates from Saudi arabia, is propagated from Saudi arabia, is funded by Saudis, to destroy muslm societies.

Indeed organs that they have setup creates hundreds of Aalims every year such a creation seems to really scare the life out of some people over here. I am surprised as to how such policies help destroy Islamic societies when they create thousands of Hafiz each year, it is true that they have their ideology that is called Shafai or Wahabi but I don't think that anyone has the right to stop any division of religion to grow.

Pak-Saudi relations priceless: Zardari

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said the country attached high value to its friendship with Saudi Arabia and urged enhancing bilateral ties further.

Talking to Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Omar Khan Alisherzai who met Zardari at the Presidency on Thursday, the president urged the ambassador to work for further enhancing socio-economic, trade, commercial and cultural ties between the two countries.

Alisherzai briefed the president on matters regarding the relations between the two countries. The ambassador later met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who also highlighted the importance of Pakistan’s relations with Saudi Arabia and hoped ties would be further strengthened through cooperation in the political, commercial, economic, defence and cultural sectors. Talking to the ambassador, the prime minister said Islamabad and Riyadh shared brotherly relations based on a common faith and values. The ambassador informed Gilani about the status of the five Pakistani citizens detained in Saudi Arabia, saying the detainees had been provided consular access.

He also informed the prime minister about his meetings with various senior officials in Saudi Arabia including Saudi Minister for Religious Affairs Prince Faisal Bin Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, Chairman Saudi Research and Marketing Group and Imam of Masjid-e-Nabawai Abdur Rahman Ali Al-Hudheifi. The prime minister also directed the ambassador to extend all possible facilities to Pakistani haj pilgrims this year.

claiming that General Hameed Gul had contacted Osama Bin Laden who was then known to provide financial support to the Afghan mujahideen,

Isn't CIA chosen him to help Afghan Mujahideen? Also, he said number of times that proof his contacts with Osama Bin Laden but no one can do that, similarly he told western countries to give him visa and trail him.. Yet they don't do that.. just bark around while claiming again and again and again... I see what they are doing.. making so many claims so everyone forget about reaching the fact, like they did for Osama Bin Laden, who was invited by CIA themself to help Afghan Mujahedeen, now known to be biggest terrorist, and yet no proof against him..

the Saudi don't want Wahabi/Salafi militancy in Saudi Arabia,

again, people are promoting western agenda here just to proof that USA is the innocent kid who came to Afghanistan to protect whole Islamic World from Wahabism extremism. Just point to be noted that wahabi name initially given by britishers to saud family just after they started strugle of Independence against British.. while Abdul Wahab died in 17th century.. yet we muslims speak same words just to show who we are following.. Divide and rule.. Saudis are only accused because they help Afghan Mujahideens in the jihaad called by Pakistani Ruler, Turkish Ruler, Egyptian Ruler, and Saudi ruler..

Kind Sir
The Evangelical christians of USA are doing almost the same in Africa and Israel !
and they have been at it long before the Saudi.
They are doing it much more organized and at a bigger scale.

There is nothing wrong with suggesting or promoting an ideology.
One preaches salafi, some one else can preach some thing else.
both have an equal right.

Problem is that of practice. I think who ever has resources ( Saudi, Americans) like to export their work to others.

That is why I believe that all parties should be allowed to spread their ideology, the only problem is that a rapid growth in the Saudi version of Wahabi Islam scares the life out of many other sects and then they join the US Band Wagon and say that it is supporting terrorism.

Nothing is credible until there is a proof of Saudi involvement.

Yet there are clear proff of Afghanistan, India and at some occasions Iran arming some militants in Afghanistan and Balauchistan.
All this is from post 9/11.

Pakistan have 3 friendly states namely, China, SaudiArabia and Turkey and to balme any one of them for anti Pakistan activities is an act of insanity.

I can bet that you don't know much about the sects you are criticizing.
I have personally interviewed people in respective states and found that Iranian people are totally misguided about sunnis.
While interviewing Shias from Saudi I felt that they only want to get more share in wealth for no justifiable reason. They are always critical of Saudi Arabia.

The attitude, the complete poverty of ethics displayed in the above quote is exactly why it is important for Pakistanis to keep these ideologies at bay -- for the writer Salam 108, the content, the substance, the right wrong, good bad, is immaterial - he, like so many Pakistanis equates wrong with right, equates good with bad -- this is a reflection not just of the idea that a little bit education is dangerous but of the larger moral failure with Islamia - see, good, is the opposite, not the equal of bad.

And for many such as Salman108, who find in their poverty of faith in God, find utility in ideas that threaten to destroy whatever remains of Muslims societies and their justification is that US and Evangelical and martians and indians are doing it, so should we - again, note the equation, devoid of substance but replete with the socialist idea of "democratic right".

This is what is to become of us as Muslims? Over a bunch of Salafi/Takfiri bodies.

Saudi money ? It depends..... what do you consider as Saudi money?
Lot of money of Saudis is invested in many US based oil and petrochemical companies and in some cases it is 50 - 50 ownership.
It would be very stupid to keep money in American banks so don't expect Saudi investors to be so dumb. If they have to keep their money than Swiss banks are the best bet.
Saudi state has invested all is wealth in Saudi Arabia, infrastructre development, industry development, social system development, and man power development.
You need to visit main SaudiArabian cities and industrial cities.
People from all over the world come to work there.

On the contrary only indians are allowed to work in Iran and many million $ flow every year out of Iran to Israel via inidan.
In this senario Iran look real stupid when it criticize US or as a matter of fact; Israel.
