India has a healthy stockpile of nuclear weapons and despite Pakistan's rapid pace of developing new nuclear warheads, India is fairly confident of its war capabilities. Currently, India owns 130-140 nuclear warheads as compared to Pakistan's 140-150, according to the latest assessment of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

"India and Pakistan are both expanding their nuclear weapon stockpiles as well as developing new land, sea and air-based missile delivery systems. China continues to modernize its nuclear weapon delivery systems and is slowly increasing the size of its nuclear arsenal," said the latest SIPRI report.

While the twin threat of China and Pakistan cannot be taken lightly, India has built a credible nuclear deterrent which is capable of inflicting heavy damage in a war-like situation.

"The number of warheads does not really matter. With a declared no-first use (NFU) nuclear policy, India is keen to ensure survivability and credibility of our assets and NC3 (nuclear command, control, and communication) systems for assured second-strike capabilities…We have achieved this to a large extent," a source told TOI.

"For India, nuclear weapons are not war-fighting weapons, but credible minimum deterrence, with the certainty of massive retaliation against adversaries," the source further explained.

Pakistan has a handful of cities and for that India does not really need more than 10 to 15 Nuclear Weapons. Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi are Pakistan's only economic hubs. If you take them out there will be no Pakistan left. India on the other hand has more than 4,000 cities and towns with a distributed population. This is the main reason why Pakistan even with a fewer nukes on the Indian side fears a retaliation with guaranteed extermination.

India recently started the process of inducting the country's first intercontinental ballistic missile (Agni-V) with a range of over 5,000 km almost reaching every nook and corner of China.

While there has been a concerted effort from both India and China to grow economically and settle the differences through talks, India's nuclear capabilities do have a key role to play when it comes to foiling China's expansionist plans.

Ofcourse the source is .in, no intellectually sound writing would be expected.

I am curious to know about those 4000 cities and town in India which can sustain it as a state after losing the likes of Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta in Pakistani nuke strikes?

.
India has always had this complex, in its zeal to emulate the great powers like US, Russia, China) it forgets its own geostrategic conditions. In 1965 India chose to invest in an aircraft carrier and surface warships. one Pakistani investment in an old submarine made the Indian navy completely useless. There is no defense against a ballistic missile salvo in the Indian subcontinent simply because of the short distance.

FAKE NEWS. Source is indian therefore it is all lies, propaganda, worthless conjecture and completely invalid. Ignore and move on everyone.

Truth is that india has an extreme fear and anxiety over PAKISTAN's nukes. Why else would a nation that is more than 7x bigger than us and has abundant access to the world's most advanced weapons systems whilst we are denied this privilege be so weak, powerless and incapable of fighting the Pakistan Military? The truth is in this reality.

Which idiot writes this stuff? They're nuclear weapons - of course they're to be feared.

Also anyone who thinks India is going to survive after losing 150 cities in a nuclear war is stupid. This kind of nuclear exchange will kill several billion people around the world with the impact it would have on the environment, including famine that could last upto a decade.

Anyone who thinks there is a winner in nuclear war is stupider than a monkey with a keyboard.

Read my comments in post #2

How you are proposing India to survive as a viable state after losing the likes of Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta, Madras etc, in Pakistani nuke strikes?

If the argument is about population dispersion, majority of Pakistanis live in rural areas.

Indian cities are huge while Pakistani nuke is small .
India has hydrogen bomb and Pakistan got only fission atom bomb.

So Pakistan needs lot more bomb to take them out completely.
The problem is Pakistan can use only handful of nukes say 10 to 20 of it's 140 nukes before it India retaliates 10 to 20 nukes and due to small size Pakistan get wiped out first before it can take out more indian cities in second strike , a capability which Pakistan doesn't posses .

To hurt India as much as india can hurt Pakistan , Pakistan needs thermonuclear bombs and that too in big numbers from sub marines .

.
Pakistan has 150 nuclear warheads

Increase to 300 and if that is unloaded onto india i doubt there will be a world let alone india

While You will be doing that, we shall be awaiting for your missiles with garland in hand to well come them.

Imagine if India hits Pakistan Nuclear stockpile in preemptive strike.
