The Reality of US Aid to Pakistan

we need trade. us should help us through WTO.
I still dont understand that why we afraid of default, we dont need those IMF loans. i m not saying loan is bad but we really dont need that.
We should increase our energy developments to lower the production cost which ultimately lowers the price the product and thus produces good quality products so we can compete in WTO.

WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s finance minister on Monday dismissed as “a myth” in the United States that his country is a major recipient of tens of billions of dollars in US aid.

Shaikh, who attended weekend meetings of the World Bank and IMF, said Pakistan wanted trade, not aid.

“We’re saying let’s open our markets to each other,” he said, pointing to successful negotiations with the European Union that have expanded areas of trade.

“If it is disbursed in a proper way and implemented in a proper way, then it can have far-reaching consequences for the people of Pakistan,” he said. “It would alter some misperceptions that are there.” Pakistan is a heavily indebted country, with its external debt amounting to about $58 billion and domestic debt at 6 trillion rupee ($70 billion).

Why blame the west for it? Seek answers from the CEOs and the senior management as to why 'aid' was preferred to trade. Is it not the same Pakistan that lamented the world, esp the US for a carefree attitude and lethargic response in giving out aids? And when the aid did come, we all stood witness to how efficiently it was utilized, if it was at all.

A nation cannot be developed overnight, one has to create a well thought out plan for the future. Blaming others for so long has made Pakistanis habitual of living with excuses. It is either too late already, or not late at all - depends on how long can you live with excuses.

What is the use fighting for America's war OF terror then, if Pakistan is not getting anything out of it.

"Myth that Pakistan gets billions in US aid"

i already knew that they were gonna say it sooner or later....hahaha

U.S. Continues Coalition Support Fund Reimbursements

May 26, 2010

Islamabad - The U.S. transferred $288 million to the Government of Pakistan today to reimburse Pakistan for some of the costs incurred while conducting counterinsurgency operations against violent extremists in 2009. This is in addition to the more than $1.2 billion in reimbursements already transferred to Pakistan this year by the U.S. government under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF).

The Coalition Support Fund was established by the United States in 2001 to support 27 nations, including Pakistan, for some of the costs they incur in the fight against extremist violence. Since 2001, the U.S. has reimbursed Pakistan $7.4 billion for these costs. The last CSF reimbursements were delivered to Pakistan earlier this month and included $656 million for validated CSF claims received from Pakistan for the year 2009.

Since 2001, the United States has provided more than $11 billion to Pakistan in security assistance and CSF reimbursements. During the last three years, specific security assistance provided includes 14 F-16 fighter aircraft, 10 Mi-17 and two Bell 412EP helicopters, 5 fast patrol boats, 115 Howitzer self-propelled field artillery cannons, more than 450 vehicles for Pakistan's Frontier Corps, hundreds of night vision goggles, day/night scopes, radios, and thousands of protective vests and first-aid items for Pakistan's security forces. The U.S. also provided training for more than 370 Pakistani military officers in a wide range of leadership and development programs covering topics such as counterterrorism, intelligence, logistics, medical, flight safety, and military law.

I knew some indians would come in here and try to make this thread negative. How typical!

I wonder who created this myth...Who would lie about such a thing?

BTW over half of the so-called aid isn't actually even aid. US calls it aid, but Musharraf explained this in an interview with fareed zakaria. It's reimbursements for services provided to the US, such as the supply route.

If it is the way you say it, then Hafeez already got what he is asking for - Trade, and not aid, right?

How exactly is US is getting away by paying such a pittance for WOT? Pakistan needs some people at the top who actually have a pair.

This is how the US lies.

14 F-16s were not for aid, they were embargoed F-16s from the 80s.

Half of the aid that we've received isn't aid like I said, it's payments for services provided.

I say the "myth that pakistan gets billions in aid" is a myth. Clearely, there are numerous reports of funds exceeding 1 billion which were transferred in full to pakistan. Although i will not go so far as to say pakistan survives on aid.
