The 'rat eaters' of India

Interesting, Al Jazeera media shown the light on India a filthy land and dirty. Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknowns from CNN has shown some way that we are aware of terrible conditions in India.

Darbhanga, Bihar - Far away from the high-decibel political campaigns in India’s parliamentary elections, a group of semi-naked children frantically search for something to eat in the marshland of their village in the eastern Indian state of Bihar.

These children belong to the Musahar community ("Musahar" meaning "rat eaters" in Bhojpuri), a socially marginalised community placed at the bottom rung of India's hierarchical caste system.

About 250 families from the community have been living in Kubaul village in Darbhanga district for the past 150 years.

"Earlier our meals were dependant on the availability of rats and the grains that we would procure from the rat holes," Malhu Sada, 74, a member of the community, told Al Jazeera. "However things are changing for some families as their children have gone to different states to work. We now catch rats mostly during the harvesting season."
The state government has accorded them Maha Dalit status, which makes them eligible for various government schemes that have failed to lift the community out of poverty and backwardness.
Narayan Ji Choudhary, founder of Mithila Gram Vikas Parishad (MGVP), an NGO that works for the welfare of the community, said: "The condition of Musahars is the worst of the lot. Some of the lower caste communities work as bamboo artisans, cobblers or cleaners but Musahars are unskilled labourers. This is the reason that they are the lowest rung in the caste hierarchy even in the scheduled castes."
Residents of Kubaul village have decided to boycott the current elections for being discriminated against.
"All the neighbouring villages have electricity with all the basic amenities, but we still live in such inhuman conditions. There aren’t any schools and the nearest school is 2km away," Kusum Lal, 72, said.
"Children have to cross a river to reach school and the river is full throughout the season. During the rainy season, our village gets cut off from everything as we don’t even have a road to reach our village. Our demand is 'road nahi, toh vote nahi' (No road, no vote)," he added.
The community found in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are landless and don’t have their own livestock. While some manage to buy food, most still have to procure food every day and which involves scrounging whatever they can such as small fish, snails and even cockroaches.

Unfortunate, wondering why super duper economy is not able to fix this issue?

I dont think this has got anything to do with Indian economy....Yes it is doing well.... But how many are benefited out of this growth or big economy is the question.....There are different organisation, agencies, departments to look in to such issues, and most probably these agencies must have taken fund from "the super duper economy" and they must have diverted to their own purposes.... (in short let us call it corruption)

Let him have his satisfaction on scoring a brownie point, and let him feel happy about it..... But does that change the subject in Hand???? No right???? Let us accept the fact that there are poor people in India and authorities are ignorant towards them...
First they eating rat's has nothing to do with caste system, second it not like every musheher eats rat every day because they not have grains, rat meat is actually way better then chicken or pork, rat's not eat anything dirty they eat pure grain.
These days in bihar most of ppl not hv problem finding daily wages jobs, thr is so much work, so many of them go out to other states too. But very save any money because of drinking habit and large family, of course they need a lot of improvement and it's going on, most of the villages hv roads in bihar now, and it's good to see they r rising thr voice for basic demands.
They way Pakistan's bringing caste system and military spending in this hv no idea abt anything, eating grass from 1974 does have made thr brain like donkey brain.

Heartening to see people make fun of Poverty.

How many brownie points for laughing at the poor ?

Its a matter of shame for us Indians that these people are ignored. meanwhile our government is busy appeasing people based on their Religion Shame on our govt. too.:tsk::tsk::tsk:

Eating dog meat is now illegal in China.

Animal rights and all that.

But NE Indians still do eat dog meat. As do Koreans and Vietnamese.

Its about Culture, Sire.

even if these people will get all the basic services within their reach. Rat eating will remain a part of their daily habits ( My opinion )

....not really. The Real shame is on the people who keep voting these people back to power by disguising it as a vote for secularism.

So you agree that there is a problem right??? Let us discuss that.... If some one from across the boarder find satisfaction in bashing India let him have his fun.... Why you want to stop that????

We should be angry at our governments and panchayat's for this, and use our anger towards them (rather than at a random PDF member).....

Hmmm okay. U can't just blame gov. For everything. They hv themselves to blame for 70% of problem, hving large family, drinking problem, not sending children's to school, not work when pocket is full and many more, giving votes for drink and few hundred rupees, . They need to wake up too and not just hide behind caste system shield, even u can see high caste crushing low caste are no longer the situation. I m being a high caste know it, thoese days when do make them do begar are long gone. I don't think now days anyone can make them do anything forcefully, at least not in my area. And i m from bihar which use to be the kingdom of caste system.

Exactly. . if we have problems . . address them . .. acceptance is the first step towards a solution.

Thats why i said shame on us Indians first and Govt. later. somewhere down the line we are the biggest culprits.
