Mujib became unpopular after 1971. People were unhappy with the AL administration. Mujib tried to infuse India-love in the minds of the people without really understanding that the FFs fought to safeguard the country's sovereignty. People were not willing to give up this to India for the sake of getting its friendship. So, AL and Sk. Mujib became unpopular even before the end of 1972.

Some army officers who were PA officers before joining FF sought a remedy of the situation and moved. Sk. Mujib, his wife, his three sons, two daughter-in-laws and many others were killed. A total of eighteen persons were killed in the subsequent coup that was staged on 15th August, the Indian Independence Day.
