Two New South Wales police officers were found to have racially abused a pair of Afghan women after one was asked to “swear to Allah” during a traffic stop.
In footage released on October 31 of the incident, one officer wearing a bodycam can be heard saying “you have to be the most stupidest person I’ve met as the driver of a motor vehicle” to the 24-year-old female driver.
In the following exchange, the officer asks for the passenger to produce identification documents and threatens to put her in prison after being told she arrived in Australia on a temporary visa.
“Don’t argue with me love or you’ll be going in the back of the paddy wagon as accessory to bloody murder,” the police officer says.
“Don’t you get aggro or you’ll be in the back of a divvy going back to the jail, don’t take advantage of our system.”
The incident took place in Sydney’s western suburbs on April 20 and was released after an investigation from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
Later in the video, the second police officer asks the driver “well what’s your religion” and to “swear to Allah” that she didn’t know where to stop when the police attempted to pull her over.
The commission found that “both officers engaged in serious misconduct during the relevant traffic stop” and should be recommended for disciplinary action. Credit: Law Enforcement Conduct Commission via Storyful
