Father of China's Great Firewall discusses being persona non grata, admits to skirting the censorship he built

February 17, 2011 | 10:21 pm The man known as the father of China's so-called Great Firewall is defending his invention, which blocks out hundreds of thousands of foreign websites, and admits to owning software to evade the censorship he helped create.

In a rare English-language newspaper interview published Friday, Fang Binxing, president of the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, told the state-owned Global Times that he owned six virtual private networks, or VPNs, to scale the firewall and determine what was and wasn't accessible in China.

"I have six VPNs on my home computer," Fang, 50, told the newspaper. "But I only try them to test which side wins: the GFW or the VPN."

He added, "I'm not interested in reading messy information like some of that anti-government stuff."

Fang, who could not be reached for comment Friday by The Times, said the filtering technology was operational five years before it came online in 2003, and he likened the system to traffic control that constantly required upgrading.

The firewall is assumed to identify keywords to prevent access to websites featuring sensitive topics such as Tibetan independence or the outlawed spiritual group, the Falun Gong.

The mechanism is also blamed for blocking popular social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in China, which has the world's largest community of Internet users, an estimated 457 million people.

Experts say more and more Chinese are downloading censorship-circumvention tools, like the VPNs Fang uses or proxy servers, in response to the tighter Internet environment. At the same time, authorities are blocking access to sites making the software available.

Still, the number of Facebook users in China reportedly doubled to 700,000 after company CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited the country, according to Socialbakers.com, a site that tracks Facebook statistics. Facebook has been blocked in China since 2009.

Fang is vilified within China's small but thriving technological elite. On his site, Hong Bo, a popular IT blogger in Beijing who goes by the screen name Keso, features a voodoo doll of sorts with Fang's head affixed.

"Fang Binxing is a synonym for the Great Firewall and people hate the Great Firewall," said Hong, who added that he believes blocking open source sites such as Google's Android is far more detrimental to the country's development than censorship of anti-government material.

In one embarrassing episode in December, Fang joined a Twitter-like service in China known as a micro-blog or weibo. Within hours, he was battered by thousands of angry and abusive comments laced with expletives.

"He is the enemy of all netizens who are forced to scale the wall all day long because of GFW," read one post translated by China Digital Times, a site dedicated to news out of China.

Fang shut down his account a few days later.

"I regard the dirty abuse as a sacrifice for my country," he told the Global Times about the incident. "They can't get what they want so they need to blame someone emotionally: like if you fail to get a U.S. visa and you slag off the U.S. visa official afterwards."

The interview with Fang did not appear in the Chinese-language edition of the Global Times, which is far more nationalistic and anti-Western in tone. English-language newspapers in China often display more leeway exploring sensitive issues, partly because of their small and largely foreign audience.

China has some civil servants who wants to hated by the media.
For example:
Ma Yin-chu, he hated by the media for 40 years. Because he made "the one-child policy".
Zhu Rongji, he hated by the media for 10 years. Because he made "State-owned enterprise reform".
...
Do they really like to be hated by the media? No, No one likes that, they are only willing to sacrifice their own.

Who only know how to please the media, they are really great?

The most hated man in China (perhaps)?

That is the most ridiculous thread title in the last month (maybe).

you are taking the one china tag line a bit seriously. There are millions I presumed in china who hate the censorship. Not everyone likes brainwashing like you do, perhaps? ( see below) :D

regardless , why do you troll so much- the topic was harmless humor and the article is an interesting article. I bet 99.99% did not known who built the famous internet blocking software. why get all bent out of shape everytime?

I love this racial stereotype that Indians always use against Chinese. We must be "brainwashed".

Would you care to explain, how I was apparently "brainwashed"... given the fact that I was born and raised in Hong Kong?

This stereotype is also leveled against overseas "ethnic Chinese", regardless of their actual nationality.

How can you ensure you are not brainwashed? Do you think Chinese people's IQ lower than your?
Your media is very powerful, and it like to lie. For example: Falun Gong newspaper even funded by the U.S. Government.

Why do we let the malicious media into China?

You are welcome to discuss that issue:

Ordinary Chinese people can become president, but not through the media to get the seat. You have to start from the most junior civil servants, You must through capacity and effort been promoted again and again, So he is definitely not a fool who can be president.
So USA had some good president, for example: Clinton, Bush(old)...and USA also had some bad president, for example(only my opinion): Bush(young), Obama...But the China National policy is very stable.
Wall Street can control USA gov through the media.
For example, family planning, state-owned enterprises reform, etc... these policies all can not implemented in the USA. Because selfish media will destroy it all, and USA President also did not dare to do it. But China can do it!

Racial ? dear man- are you trying to drum up something false or you are just mistaken ? The Republicans say democrats are for brainswashing kids in school with liberal policies. the very many religions say each other brainwashes people. the world does not revolve around your race my friend. and it is certainly not prudent to throw the race card everytime. brain washing, brain control same thing. meaning you want them to hear only what you want them to hear... nothing racial, nope .

^^^Answer my question, how was I "brainwashed", given that I was born and raised in Hong Kong?

Indians members play this "brainwashing" card every single time, but none have ever given a logical answer.

so its not racial anymore ? you agree...:). Let's not get all bent out of shape, lately , you are derailing and trolling a bit too much.- chill man. I'm not going to get into the gutter with you on this. this is a simple , lovely article to read. I'll even aplogize if the word " brainwshing" was hurtful. Buh Bye

I disagree, I have seen nothing from Indians here, except one racial stereotype after another.

Now maybe you can finally answer my question. How was I "brainwashed", given the fact that I was born and raised in Hong Kong?

Headline like this shows how out of touch LA Times is with the Chinese public. Fang does not even come remotely close to being 'the most hated man in China'.

For starter, he haven't even got shoed yet, unlike Ren Zhiqiang, who would actually has a legitimate chance to claim that illustrious title.

The "technological elite" actually aren't the scientists and engineers that developed this technology. They're mostly upper class hedge fund managers that like to sip fancy French wine, listen to VoA brainwashing and are completely out of touch with the average worker. They use the technology, but guess what, so do 12 year olds. They just use it more maliciously.

I actually thought Ren Zhiqiang was paid by the government to take heat off of them.

there is one famous blogger..i guess his name is "Han Han "..many youngsters follow him..most loved blogger in china.
