China has kept the utmost restraint in the face of Vietnamese provocations to avoid the escalation of a tense situation. In response to provocations, China only used civilian vessels and chose a diplomatic channel for communications with the Vietnamese.

However, this restraint has failed to win respect in exchange. Vietnam increased the number of vessels at the scene and even mobilized some armed ships and frogmen. They even put up a lot of fishing nets and barricades in the relevant waters, seriously threatening the safety of China's vessels, drilling equipment and personnel, and seriously endangering navigation.

First: China surely violate the international law of sea when drilling oil in disputed zone.

Second: U dont need to keep restraint coz u has violated the law already. U can use warship and shoot at us if u have the guts too. and we will have the reason to blow up ur oil rig and sink all of ur warship.

War serves for politics. The political bonus of Sino-Viet war was huge for China. From then, China became a player in the world market. China and US cooperated to collapse Soviet Union. We got what we wanted. Vietnam unfortunately played China's stepping-stone role. Pitiful.

China has already defeated Vietnam in 1974, 1979 and 1988. Thats why Cambodia and Laos are still independent countries and Chinese allies and the Paracel Islands (Xisha Islands) are under Chinese control. If we had lost to Vietnam in any of those wars, Cambodia and Laos would be part of Vietnam and Xisha Islands would be under Vietnamese control.
