It has got less to do with being religious and more to do with Identity.
Being third generation pakistani, your identity is "muslim", "pakistani" and "british", but it is up to you to decide which is your overriding primary identity.
It comes from our basic tribal loyalty, you can use "religion" or "nationality" or "football club" to identify with your preferred tribe.
I dont know why religious people of pakistani origin in uk are defensive of UK govt policies, I am not even sure that is true.
This is not necessarily about being muslim or being pakistani as such. You can say same about people of other background.
