What's new

The hopelessly romantic dead poets' society :)

Sung by the Legendary Ustad Amanat Ali Khan. Ghazal was by Khwaja Haider Ali Aatish Lucknowi.

ye aarzuu thii, tujhe gul ke ruu-ba-ruu karte
ham aur bulbul-e-betaab guftguu karte

payaambar na mayassar hua, to Khuub huaa
zubaan-e-Ghair se kyaa sharaH-e-aarzuu karte

meri tarah se mah-o-mahar bhii haiN aavaara
kisii habiib kii ye bhi haiN justujuu karte

jo dekhtey terii zanjeer-e-zulf kaa aalam
aseer honey ki aazaad aarzuu kartey

na puuchh aalam-e-bargashta taala'aii Aatash
barastii aag, jo baraaN ki aarzuu karte

Read the following, my God.

jo dekhtey terii zanjeer-e-zulf kaa aalam
aseer honey ki aazaad aarzuu kartey

@ qsaark: the secretary Duhastmish has disappeared, do you want to take over his post? ;)

Yakeenan! Shikwa aur jawaab-e-Shikwa aksar saath saath hi chalta hai. Chahay woh koi bhi maidaan ho.

It is true that we're famous in the methods of obiesance

We're narrating this story of pain out of compulsion

Though our tunes are silent, we're filled with complaint

If our wailing comes to the lips sometimes, then excuse us

O God! Listen to the remonstrance from your faithful too

Listen to some complaint from the ones who are so accustomed to praise you

Without a doubt, one of the best pieces of urdu poetry to come out of 19th century South Asia.

@ Bezerk and Mastan Khan: you guys are churning out good stuff!

(though the romance is amiss and also the hopelessness )

Hello Nadja,

I am just keeping in perspective the title of our forum as well---defence pk

Tumhain dillagi bhool jaani paray gi
Muhabbat ki rahoon main aa kar tu daikhoo

zakaham pay zakham kha kay ji
apnay lahoo k ghoont pi
aah na kar laboon ko si
ishq hay dil lagi nahi

yeh Ishq nahi aasaan
bas itna samjh li jiay
ek aag ka darya hay aur koud kar jana hay
Tumhain dillagi bhool jaani paray gi
Muhabbat ki rahoon main aa kar tu daikhoo

Tarapnay pay meray na phir tum hansoo gay
Kabhi dil kissi say laga kar tu daikhoo

khuda k liay chour do ab yeh parda
rukh say naqab utha keh bari dair ho gaiee
mahool ko talawat-e-qura' an kiay huway
kabhi parda kabhi jalwa yeh tamasha kia hay
keh hain aajj ham tum nahi ghair koi
shab-e-wasal bhi hay hijaab is qadar kion
zara rukh say aanchal utha kar tu daikhoo
wafaoon ki ham say tawaqo nahi hay
magar aik baar aazma kar tu daikhoo
zamanay ko apna bana kar tu daikha
humain bhi tum apna bana kar tu daikhoo
Tumhain dillagi bhool jaani paray gi

" IN MY DARK WINTER,

LYING ILL,

AT LAST I ASK,

HOW FARES MY NEIGHBOUR ".
BASHO

Another of my favorite:

Sung by Mehdi Hasan. I can't recall the name of the lyricist though.

mujhe tum nazar se giraa to rahe ho
mujhe tum kabhii bhii bhulaa naa sakoge
na jaane mujhe kyuuN yaqiiN ho chalaa hai
merii yaad ko tum miTaa naa sakoge

merii yaad hogii jidhar jaaoge tum
kabhii naGhmaa ban ke, kabhii ban ke aaNsuu
taRaptaa mujhe har taraf paaoge tum
shamaa jo jalaayii merii vafaa ne
bujhaanaa bhii chaaho bujhaa naa sakoge

kaabhii naam baatoN meN aayaa jo meraa
to bechain ho hoke dil thaam loge
nigaahoN pe chhaayegaa Gham kaa andheraa
kisii ne jo puuchhaa sabab aaNsuoN kaa
bataanaa bhii chaaho bataa naa sakoge
