PESHAWAR - At least 30 persons were killed and several others were injured while dozens of mud houses were razed to the ground in the province as heavy rains and flood waters played havoc on Monday, reports gathered here said.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Army has started rescue operation in the flood hit areas on the request of the civil administration.
According to details, the heavy rains caused floods in Kabul and Jindi rivers and damaged thousands of the mud houses all over Peshawar, Charsadda districts and Khyber Agency.
Around 15 persons were killed in Khyber Agency area. Five dead bodies were recovered from a ravine at Takhta Baig area of Tehsil Jamrud and a woman and a child drowned in a rainy nullah of Bar Qambarkhel area whereas five persons were killed and 4 reportedly went missing as their houses were razed to the ground by the floodwater. Two persons were also killed in a village near Jamrud when their mud house caved in while a bridge near Takhta Baig on the main Pak-Afghan Road was also swept away and halted all kinds of traffic.
The reports from Kohat also suggested no different picture where a woman was killed and more than 20 houses were swept away.
Meanwhile, reports from Peshawar and other surrounding areas also said that at least 13 persons were killed in Reegi, Shahi Bala, Mathra and other parts of the surroundings areas of Peshawar and Charsadda. Moreover, a person also reportedly went missing when a rescue boat capsized at Pichgi.
Moreover, Charsadda main road was also badly affected by heavy rains and a large number of people were stranded on rooftops of their houses, many of those have later been rescued through helicopters and boats. Bacha Khan Markaz, Central Secretariat of Awami National Party, was also affected by the flood.
The NWFP government has declared emergency in all three big hospitals of Peshawar and directed the Relief Commissioner for early help of the flood victims.
The Irrigation Department officials have confirmed heavy floods in Kabul, Jindi and Kheyali rivers. Similarly, the political administration of Khyber Agency also confirmed heavy floods in Jamrud.

7 US choppers to join flood relief operation
ISLAMABAD (APP) - US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W Patterson on Friday announced that as an initial response to the floods in Pakistan, the US government is immediately making seven helicopters available to assist the Pakistani government in its relief efforts.
“The heavy monsoon rains have caused much sufferings,” said Ambassador Patterson, adding “we are working with Pakistani government to review urgent humanitarian needs and hope to announce additional assistance very soon.”

U.S. accelerates flood relief in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (July 31, 2010) – The U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W. Patterson, today announced that the U.S. government is continuing to send assistance for flood relief efforts in the country.
“The United States supports Pakistan’s emergency relief efforts on behalf of people affected by recent monsoon floods,” said Ambassador Patterson.

On July 31, a U.S. Air Force C-130H delivered international assistance to Islamabad, Pakistan, in response to catastrophic monsoon flooding. This was the first of numerous deliveries to occur over the next few days.

In response to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority’s specific request for the following assistance, the U.S. is providing:

Four Zodiac inflatable rescue boats, which are designed and built for lightness and speed on rapidly flowing waters;
Two water filtration units, which provide pumping, purification, storage and distribution. Each unit can fulfill the daily water requirements of up to 10,000 people;
An initial delivery of more than 50,000 halal meals from U.S. supply depots in the region. The meals are being delivered to Pakistan’s military for distribution in flood-stricken areas. In addition, arrangements are being made to deliver more halal meals to Pakistan in the coming days; and
Twelve pre-fabricated steel bridges that can temporarily replace highway bridges damaged by flooding in Peshawar and Kurram Agency. The Provincial Government and Pakistan’s military are coordinating their efforts to ensure the use of these bridges.

atleast we are getting some realy assistance from US in this matter. despite all the things for which i dont like the US, they do support us in such hours of need. the Earthquake disaster in northren areas a few years back wa another good example.
