What's new

The first six MiG-29 fighters intended for Indian air forces have been upgr

MIG-29 is a beauty. This UPG version looks like a pregnant version of it :P

Is this also an upgraded one ??

It lacks the hump seen on other MiGs.

Is it because it is a twin seater.

sir what are the advantages of any twin seater fighter other than the workload sharing between two pilots?
Thanks in advance :)

They will get all the electronic goodies you mentioned, but I think the hump is for additional internal fuel. I'm not sure about it.

These were notoriously short ranged birds due to the old fuel guzzling engines (two of them). Hence the upgraded ones will have more fuel, as well as a hugely improved engine with lesser fuel requirements. Range and endurance will be increased a lot, which makes these birds truly multirole platforms, as opposed to being excellent air superiority aircrafts with a short range.

Yes that hump houses a new Conformal Fuel Tank (CFT) for increasing range
on internal fuel...in normal circumstances, frees up space on the pylons for more
weapons instead of drop-tanks.

I heard we're buying new AAMs from Ukraine. Its the R-27 (all three versions,
infrared homing R-27T, semi-active radar homing R-27R and active radar-homing
R-27AE are included I think, with max ranges of 70km, 80km, and 130km respectively.)

^^ According to RIA Novosti, both MiG-29 and Su-30MKI will have these new-build
missiles.

P.S. - These R-27s are much-improved versions of the old missile India already has,
and are bought from Ukraine, not Russia. It'll be great to have MiG-29s of the
IAF and INAF flying around with 130-km BVRAAMs.

The twin seaters are probably squadron trainers. With senior and junior pilot both there.
