(Reuters) - Ratings agency Fitch downgraded the debt ratings of Japan's Sony Corp and Panasonic Corp to "junk" status citing weakness in their consumer electronics and TV operations, further diminishing the luster of the once-great Japanese brands.

The cut to below investment grade, the first by a ratings firm, comes as the floundering Japanese tech giants face weak demand and fierce competition from Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics.

Japanese giants are facing a huge storm heading their way. Panasonic and Sharp make extremely top quality products but they are too expensive. Back in those days you can see Sony products in almost every household, now even plenty of Japanese small resellers don't have Sony products in their stores. Panasonic got a major loan from a big Japanese bank while Sharp got a capital injection of $500 million from Intel. Demand from Europe is very low because of the ongoing crisis and that is gonna last at least for a couple of years. Japan angered China and are facing our wrath with massive boycotts. Tough competitions coming from ZTE, HTC, Lenovo, Apple, Samsung and LG are squeezing these Japanese giants and pushing them further away. Not are they losing market share of home electric appliances now their car industry are facing trouble. The 80's, golden times, is something they will never enjoy again. What these companies can do are slicing jobs, dumping product lines which aren't profitable and start praying for a miracle.
